Overall rating 4.5/5If you’re after something with standout looks and a refined, confident drive, the Mercedes CLS could be just right. First launched in 2004, it introduced a new idea – bringing coupe style to the saloon market. The second-generation model (2011–2018) improved comfort, equipment and efficiency, while the third generation (2018 onwards) added even more technology and polish, matching rivals like the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. You’ll find most Mercedes CLS models come packed with high-end features, powerful yet smooth diesel engines and well-trimmed interiors. It’s not quite as practical as the E-Class saloon – especially in the rear seats – but it makes up for that with a big helping of style. Higher trims often include full leather, LED lighting and modern infotainment setups.
The Mercedes CLS comes well equipped with safety features like automatic emergency braking, active lane-keeping, traffic sign assist and multiple airbags. Later models share safety tech with the E-Class, which holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating, giving you added peace of mind.
Depending on the generation, you’ll find a range of options – from efficient four-cylinder diesels (220d, 250 CDI) to strong V6 diesels (350 CDI, 400d) and petrol V6s. AMG variants bring V8 power for serious performance. Most UK buyers tend to favour diesel models for their balance of power and fuel economy.
On most models, you'll find sat nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, heated leather seats and dual-zone climate control as standard. Later versions add widescreen digital displays, smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and enhanced driver-assist systems on higher trims.
On paper, the Mercedes CLS’s four-cylinder diesel models (like the 220 d or 250 CDI) are listed around 55–56 mpg (WLTP). In real-world UK driving, the average is closer to 40 mpg. If you’re eyeing a V6 diesel, expect real-world figures around 35–40 mpg. Petrol engines will be thirstier – mid-30s for V6s and around 25–28 mpg for V8 AMGs, depending on your driving style.
Check that major recalls, like injector replacements on some early diesels, have been done. Make sure all electronics work, especially the infotainment and phone pairing. Air suspension (if fitted) is great for comfort, but can be costly if it fails. For peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection before buying.
The Mercedes CLS is generally praised for its solid build and dependable performance. While some owners have reported minor electrical or infotainment issues, major problems are relatively rare. Mercedes doesn’t always rank at the top of reliability surveys, but many drivers are satisfied with their cars and enjoy trouble-free ownership when the vehicle is well-maintained.
