Overall rating 4.5/5With space for four, solid build quality and a calm road presence, it blends functionality with the appeal of a more luxurious car. The Mercedes CLK is for drivers who want comfort and refinement without unnecessary fuss, offering a steady feel on the road, practical boot space, and more modern safety and tech features in later models. Compared to rivals like the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Audi A4 Cabriolet, it leans more towards long-distance comfort than sporty handling, with smooth engines, low road noise, and options for automatic gearboxes.
You’ll find stability control (ESP), anti-lock brakes, traction control and multiple airbags – with side-impact and curtain airbags fitted on later models. Brake Assist was also added, helping you apply maximum braking force in an emergency. Some versions introduced Mercedes’ early PRE‑SAFE® system that prepares the cabin if a collision seems likely.
The second-generation Mercedes CLK (2002–2010) offered plenty of choice. Petrols range from 1.8-litre four-cylinders up to 5.4-litre AMG V8s, while diesels include 2.1-litre and 3.0-litre units. If you prefer ease, most larger engines come with automatic gearboxes, while some smaller petrols are manual.
Even earlier Mercedes CLKs come well-equipped with cruise control, climate control and electric windows. On newer or higher-spec cars you’ll find satnav, upgraded audio and parking sensors, which can make daily driving easier.
Fuel economy varies by engine. Four-cylinder petrols average around 36mpg, while V6 petrols tend to sit nearer 25–28mpg. Diesels are the most efficient, managing 40–43mpg on longer runs. In everyday driving, you can usually expect mid-20s for petrols and low-30s for diesels.
Check for worn interior trim, dashboard faults and wind noise from the frameless doors. Uneven tyre wear is also something to look out for. For peace of mind, book The AA Vehicle Inspection before you commit.
A Mercedes CLK can serve you well if it’s been properly maintained. Most mechanical parts are robust, but owners often mention electrical niggles and trim rattles. Make sure the one you’re buying has a full service history to reduce risks.
