Whether it’s comfort for families or advanced technology for everyday convenience, the GLE adapts to a range of needs. Designed to deliver comfort, safety and strong performance, the GLE has built a reputation for excellent equipment, high safety scores and refined engines since its introduction in 2015. The second generation (2019) improved cabin tech, quality and offers a 7-seat layout. Compared to rivals like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90, it stands out for its plush interior, assured road handling and wide range of engine choices, including diesel, plug-in hybrid, and AMG performance options, alongside smart infotainment and driver assistance systems as standard on most trims.
The Mercedes GLE is loaded with advanced safety tech, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and multiple airbags. Higher trims add features like adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera. The car's strong safety record is a reassuring quality and should fill you with confidence.
Earlier GLEs (2015–2019) offer efficient four-cylinder diesels (GLE 250d), punchy V6 diesels (GLE 350d) and plug-in hybrid (GLE 500e) as well as high-performance AMG petrols. The latest models (from 2019) expand the range with more efficient 2.0-litre diesels (GLE 300d), powerful six-cylinder diesels and a diesel plug-in hybrid. Petrol variants and AMG models are always there if you'd rather plump for something with a little extra punch.
Nearly all Mercedes GLEs come with dual widescreen digital displays, voice control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, DAB radio and wireless charging. Higher trims bring a Burmester sound system, panoramic sunroof and advanced driver assistance features.
Diesel versions of the GLE are the most efficient, with the GLE 300d averaging around 40mpg in real-world use. The diesel plug-in hybrid, known as the GLE 350de, can manage up to 66 miles on electric alone and achieves impressive numbers if you regularly charge. Petrol and AMG models are thirstier – something to bear in mind if you're a driver likely to stack up the miles quickly.
Focus on a full service history and check that all technology works as it should especially air suspension, infotainment and electric seat controls. Tyre and brake wear can be costly, and it’s wise to have a thorough inspection for peace of mind. You can use The AA Vehicle Inspection service for a trusted, detailed report.
Most GLE owners report a dependable ownership experience, especially with regular servicing. Some earlier models had minor electrical issues, though these are rare on new-shape cars. Mercedes offers several service plans and warranty options, which help minimise stress during ownership.
