Overall rating 4.5/5With room for up to eight passengers and luggage, this is a family-friendly, business-ready mover that delivers on comfort. The Mercedes Viano is a large people carrier built from 2004 to 2015, based on the practical Vito van, offering durability and an adaptable layout. Its three rows of sliding seats and high roofline accommodate both adults and children. Many models feature luxurious details, but it is the flexibility and robust build that set the Viano apart. It competes with rivals like the Volkswagen Caravelle, Hyundai i800, and Chrysler Grand Voyager, favored for its powerful, reliable diesel engines and sturdy build. The Viano’s size makes it better suited to motorways than narrow streets.
Most Mercedes Vianos include front airbags, stability control, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretensioners. Higher trims or later years add more airbags and improved braking systems. Side and curtain airbags are available, especially on newer or higher-spec versions, so check individual vehicles for the full list.
Early Vianos came with a 3.2-litre V6 petrol and a choice of 2.2-litre CDI and 2.8-litre CDI diesels. Updates added a 3.0-litre CDI diesel outputting 204bhp and a 258bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol. Most models have a five-speed automatic gearbox that delivers smooth changes. The only exceptions are the 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre CDIs, which come with a six-speed manual transmission.
The Viano’s standard kit includes electric windows, remote central locking and an audio system. Some models add Bluetooth, dual-zone climate, leather trim and navigation, especially as you move up the trim levels. Entry models can be sparse by modern standards, so check used examples for additional options like parking sensors or upgraded media.
The 2.2-litre and 2.0-litre diesels average around 33mpg, while larger diesels drop closer to 30mpg. Petrol Vianos are much thirstier, with real-world figures in the low to mid-20s mpg. Long runs boost economy, with city journeys yielding less predictable numbers. Always check real-world owner reports if fuel bills are crucial.
Watch for sliding door issues and worn interiors that show signs of high use, possibly commercial. Service histories are important, as neglected diesels can lead to costly repairs. Make sure electrics and air conditioning work as expected. With The AA Vehicle Inspection, you get an expert check for peace of mind.
The Viano is generally robust, with the diesel engines being dependable if they're well maintained. Suspension and brakes may have been worked hard on high-mileage or ex-taxi examples. Electronics are usually reliable, but test all features on any used Viano. With regular servicing, most major mechanicals are long-lasting.
