The Mercedes E Class has been a mainstay in the executive car market since the mid-1990s, slotting between the compact C Class and the flagship S Class. Whether you choose a saloon, estate, coupe or cabriolet, the E Class is designed to deliver luxury, space and a calm driving experience, making it a favourite for both private owners and professional drivers. The most recent generations – especially models built since 2016 – offer advanced technology and a choice of efficient engines, keeping them highly competitive with rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Key features that continue to define the E Class include an effortlessly smooth ride, strong safety credentials, a top-tier interior and a focus on practicality – especially useful if you carry passengers or luggage regularly. All in all, it’s a car built with everyday ease in mind.
Most E Class models come well equipped with standard safety tech, including multiple airbags, electronic stability control, automatic emergency braking and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. These can include active lane keeping, traffic sign recognition and optional adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Many used models from 2016 onwards achieved high Euro NCAP ratings thanks to their robust platform and impressive equipment.
The E Class range in the UK has included diesel (E 200 d, E 220 d, E 300 d, E 350 d, E 400 d), petrol (E 200, E 300, E 400, E 450), plug-in hybrids (E 300 e, E 300 de, E 350 e) and high-performance AMG models (E 43, E 53, E 63), covering everything from economical four-cylinder units to powerful V6 and V8 engines. The plug-in hybrid versions are especially handy for drivers making lots of short urban trips.
Depending on the year and trim, the E Class is available with a digital instrument cluster, widescreen infotainment display, DAB radio, sat nav, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mid- to high-spec models feature the MBUX system with voice control, optional Burmester audio, wireless charging and premium navigation – though it can be a bit complex to learn at first.
The most efficient models are the plug-in hybrids and four-cylinder diesels, with consumption of around 188mpg for the E 300 de on a combination of electric and diesel driving. In real-world use, expect 45–55mpg from the diesels (E 220 d), around 35–40mpg from the petrols and 23–33mpg from the AMG versions. Final consumption will depend on your regular routes and driving style.
It’s wise to check for a full service history, consistent Mercedes servicing and that all electrical features function as expected. Pay attention to infotainment operation, noise from engine or brakes and any marks on the paintwork or wheels, as the long saloon and estate versions can pick up car park scrapes. For earlier models, ask if any recalls (such as those affecting early software or rear seat wiring) have been addressed. If you are unsure about a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class, we can help with the AA Inspection service, where our experts will inspect a used car for you.
The latest E Class scored well in recent What Car? reliability surveys – often ranked near the top of the luxury class – though the Mercedes-Benz brand overall scores average. Most issues reported tend to be minor electrics or isolated software faults, but overall, the car is regarded as a dependable choice – especially if it’s been well maintained.
Engine sizes for the E Class vary widely, from economical 2.0-litre diesels and petrols, up to 3.0-litre V6 diesels/petrols, and as large as 6.2-litre V8s in the AMG variants. Most UK drivers looking for economy or company car use will find the 2.0-litre diesels or plug-in hybrids to provide the best balance of efficiency and power.
