Offering plush comfort, impressive safety features and plenty of space, even the longest journeys pass by with ease in this large saloon. Celebrated as a benchmark in its segment, the S-Class remains the flagship of the Mercedes range, well regarded for its smooth drive and advanced features. Effortless long-distance travel is the forte of the Mercedes S-Class, appealing to those who value calm and comfort above all else. Owners praise the S-Class for its serene feel, advanced driver aids and the unmistakable presence it brings to the road. The current generation, on sale since 2021, introduces even smarter safety features and cleaner engines, keeping it competitive with rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8, as well as even higher-end offerings from the likes of Bentley or Rolls-Royce. Key features include well-equipped interiors, air suspension, top-level infotainment and a focus on ride quality most saloons struggle to match.
The Mercedes S-Class comes loaded with advanced safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, multiple airbags, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims can add extras like active steering assist and rear passenger airbags. Little wonder Euro NCAP awarded the latest S-Class five stars.
The 2013–2020 S-Class offered smooth diesels like the S350d, various powerful petrols and hybrids including the S400h and S500e. Facelifted models included new six-cylinder diesels (S350d, S400d), mild-hybrid petrols (S450, S500) and high-performance AMG V8s and V12s. You'll also find plug-in hybrids like the S580e, with some newer versions managing over 60 miles of electric range.
All models include a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, featuring an infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus voice control. Later models introduce augmented reality navigation, wireless charging and even a removable rear tablet in higher trims.
Fuel economy varies by engine. The S350d diesel can return up to 44mpg (WLTP), while plug-in hybrids like the S580e are rated for over 100mpg on short trips with regular charging. The petrol versions typically manage between 25 and 36mpg. High-performance AMG models are less frugal, but real-world figures for diesels are often close to official claims if used mainly for motorway journeys.
Check for full service history and make sure all infotainment functions, seats and driver aids work properly. Look for signs of wear on the air suspension and check for any recalls. Alloy wheel damage and potential oil leaks on diesel models are also worth watching for. For extra reassurance, consider booking with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The S-Class isn't always at the top of the list for reliability, and running costs can be above average for the class. Most issues relate to electronics and occasional suspension faults. However, many owners report trouble-free motoring with regular servicing, and expert care usually keeps problems at bay.
