Overall rating 4.5/5The Mercedes V-Class is all about comfort, flexibility and roominess – and it delivers. Able to seat up to eight adults in style, it’s a go-to choice for those who need serious space and prefer not to compromise on luxury. Launched in the UK in 2014, it has had updates including refreshed styling, improved diesel efficiency and upgraded tech. Compared with rivals like the Volkswagen Caravelle or Ford Galaxy, it leans more toward comfort and refinement, with sliding side doors and a flexible seating system.
All V-Class models are well-equipped for safety. You’ll find multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and autonomous emergency braking as standard. Four Isofix points help with child seats, and later models introduce systems like driver attention alert, blind spot assist and crosswind stabilisation. It also earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating when tested in 2014.
You’ll typically find 2.1-litre and later 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels. Common variants include the V220d, V250d and more recent V300d, offering between 163 hp and 239 hp. These are paired with automatic gearboxes. Petrol versions are rare in the UK. If you’re regularly driving with a full load, the V250d or V300d is worth considering.
Most used V-Class models include sat nav, a touchscreen interface, DAB radio and Bluetooth. Heated leather seats, reversing cameras and cruise control are common, while higher trims (such as AMG Line or Sport Premium) offer luxuries like Nappa leather, LED lights and a Burmester sound system. Expect front and rear parking sensors as standard – helpful for a vehicle of this size.
Official fuel economy figures vary by model. The V220d offers up to 49.6 mpg (NEDC), while the V250d and V300d deliver around 44–47 mpg. In real-world driving, especially with passengers or luggage on board, you might see less – but these figures still hold up well for a vehicle of this size and capability.
Check the condition of the rail-mounted seating system and make sure the seats move or detach smoothly. Listen for suspension knocks or squeaks on the road. A complete service history is key, especially as Mercedes parts and servicing can be costly. For added reassurance, book The AA Vehicle Inspection before committing.
The V-Class feels solidly built, and models with the newer 2.0-litre diesel tend to be dependable with proper upkeep. That said, reliability scores are mixed. Just keep in mind that the sample size is relatively small, so any concerns should be weighed carefully. Regular servicing goes a long way.
