Overall rating 4/5The BMW Z4 blends cruising comfort and firm suspension to make every journey an event. Since its 2002 debut, it has evolved through several generations, mostly as a convertible with some pre-2010 coupes. The current G29 generation (2019 onwards) features a soft-top roof and a selection of petrol engines. It offers strong performance and high equipment levels, competing with models like the Porsche 718 Boxster and Audi TT Roadster. It delivers BMW’s hallmark driving experience combined with relaxed motoring, making it easy to live with day to day.
The newest BMW Z4 is well prepared in terms of safety, with features like a forward collision warning system, autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors and multiple airbags fitted as standard. It achieved a strong five-star Euro NCAP safety score in 2019. Earlier generations will have a lower-spec safety kit, so it's worth checking the listing thoroughly.
With the current Z4, you get a choice between an sDrive20i 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and a more powerful M40i 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol, which outputs 335bhp. Production of the sDrive 30i stopped in 2022. Older models offer a range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines with various outputs and both manual and automatic gearboxes.
All recent BMW Z4s come with BMW’s excellent Live Cockpit Professional, featuring two high-resolution screens, satnav, Bluetooth and DAB radio. Smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available in models with the iDrive 7 or later operating system. You can expect climate control, and heated seats are also common.
Official WLTP figures see the Z4 sDrive20i average around 39mpg, with the more powerful M40i close behind at about 36mpg, depending on exact specification. Earlier or higher-output engines are less efficient, but the Z4 remains reasonable for a sports car.
Check for faults with electrical systems and scan the alloy wheels for damage. Test for smooth operation of the clutch and gearbox. It's important to ensure all recalls were addressed by a BMW specialist, particularly on older examples. To buy with confidence, get a comprehensive pre-purchase check with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
While the BMW Z4 is generally considered dependable, some owners have reported minor electrical niggles. For certain earlier cars, there are known issues, including occasional power-steering problems. BMW ranks well for reliability in industry-wide surveys, but regular maintenance still counts for a lot.
