In terms of petrol, you’ve got a 4.4-litre V8 in the standard 50i, while range-topping X6 M gets the same engine with even more power. All cars get an automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive as standard, too.

Standard equipment on the X6 includes heated front seats, full satellite navigation and dual-zone climate control. There’s also a 10.25-inch central infotainment screen which is controlled via a handy rotary iDrive dial and this makes overall usability much better. M Sport versions gain larger wheels and a sportier look overall, courtesy of a revised bodykit and plenty of ‘M’ badges both inside and out.

The lowest-powered diesel model is the most efficient and should return up to 47.1mpg, though this figure was generated under older NEDC tests so expect slightly less in the real world. More powerful diesels get a claimed 45.6mpg, or 42.mpg for the top M50d version. When using a petrol-powered X6, expect to get in the region of 29.1mpg for the 50i or 25.4mpg for the X6 M.

There are a lot of features aboard the X6, so it’s a good idea to go through and test as many as you can. Electric seats, steering wheel buttons and infotainment controls are all worth checking to make sure they’re working as they should be.
