Overall rating 4/5The BMW 6 Series is built for those who long for comfort, style and strong performance. It comes as a sleek coupe, a practical Gran Coupe (saloon) or the spacious Gran Turismo (hatchback), though availability of these has varied across the years. Across its generations, the 6 Series has always found a balance between luxury and practicality. Inside, expect premium materials, plenty of onboard tech and a refined ride that rivals the likes of the Jaguar XK and Mercedes CLS. Key details to look out for include powerful yet efficient engines, BMW’s intuitive iDrive infotainment and parking sensors as standard. Ultimately, the 6 Series is a true long-distance cruiser, offering a reassuring, confident feel and enough space for all the family.
The BMW 6 Series is well-equipped with safety kit, with the GT version receiving a five-star crash test rating by Euro NCAP in 2017. Standard features on most models include multiple airbags, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes and parking sensors. Later models offer additional features like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and emergency braking, giving you more confidence on the go.
The 6 Series comes with a range of six-cylinder and V8 engines. Popular diesels like the 3-litre 640d mix punchy performance with decent economy. Petrol options include the 3-litre 640i (3.0-litre) and 4.4-litre V8 650i. New technology in 2015 made the engines more economical than before.
You’ll find plenty of standard kit, including BMW’s Professional iDrive infotainment system, sat nav, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control. Later versions add features like Apple CarPlay, advanced driver aids and a head-up display for that extra touch of luxury.
Fuel economy is strongest in the diesel models, with the 640d averaging just over 50mpg. When it comes to petrol engines, expect less. The 640i returns around 37mpg while the 650i averages 32mpg. Expect higher fuel costs if you regularly push the performance models.
Check bodywork and alloy wheels for parking scrapes. Test all electrical features, too, to help avoid expensive repairs. It’s worth reviewing the service history to check the car has been regularly maintained, especially for diesel engines. For added reassurance, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
BMW’s reliability record is solid. The 6 Series coupe scores well in recent owner surveys, though some electrical gremlins crop up every now and then. If well-maintained, the engine and main mechanicals are generally robust.
