Euro NCAP crash-tested the BMW iX in 2021 and awarded it its maximum rating of five stars. It scored particularly well in terms of both adult and child occupant protection, as well as for its suite of safety assistance systems. You’ll find high-tech bits of kit such as lane keeping assistance and automatic emergency braking equipped as standard on all iX models.

The entry point to the iX range comes in the form of the 40, which uses a 74kWh battery for a claimed range of up to 264 miles. Then comes the 50, which has a larger 108kWh battery and more powerful motors than the 40, and can deliver up to 380 miles of range. At the top sits the performance-focused M60, which gets the same 108kWh battery as the 50 but delivers an impressive 610bhp. It has a claimed range of around 348 miles.

All cars get lots of high-end features such as heated seats, 21-inch alloy wheels and four-zone climate control, as well as an efficiency-boosting heat pump which will allow the car to return its best-possible range even in colder weather. More expensive M Sport specifications add a range of bronze exterior highlights and some redesigned alloy wheels. All models also benefit from a huge 14.9-inch infotainment system which sits alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel for the driver. Both are packed with features.

The BMW iX is an electric vehicle, but thanks to a maximum charging speed of 195kW, it can go from 10 to 80 per cent charge in 31 minutes when connected to a rapid unit.

The BMW iX is still a relatively new vehicle, so there shouldn’t be too many issues to report. However, since all models are fitted with very large alloy wheels, we’d check these for damage and, considering its size, it’s worth noting that there haven’t been any parking scrapes committed around the edges of the car.
