BMW first launched the M4 in 2014 as the performance coupé sibling to the four-door M3. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a potent twin-turbo, straight-six engine delivering thrilling acceleration. The M4 is well-loved for its sharp, balanced handling and high levels of standard equipment. You can also expect heated memory seats, adaptive suspension and BMW’s user-friendly iDrive infotainment system. The first generation ran up to 2020, offering both manual and dual-clutch automatic options, with later models introducing Competition versions for even more focused driving. Compared with rivals like the Mercedes-AMG C63 and Porsche 911, the M4 offers an appealing mix of speed, handling prowess and everyday usability. Key highlights are its 50/50 weight distribution, spacious front seats and surprisingly practical rear seats for the class – two six-foot-tall passengers will be able to climb in easily enough.
You'll find a range of advanced safety features in the BMW M4, including multiple airbags, stability and traction control, adaptive LED headlights and strong brakes. Newer models offer additional driver aids, such as lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking – designed to give you confidence behind the wheel.
The M4 from 2014-2020 uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder petrol engine, available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Later versions featuring the Competition Pack offer slight performance increases and sharpened handling. But you can expect a minimum output of 425bhp and a rear-wheel-drive setup from all models.
Every BMW M4 comes generously equipped, featuring dual-zone climate control, heated electric front seats, sat nav, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and USB. The iDrive system uses an easy rotary control and includes an 8.8-inch screen, while Competition models come with upgraded audio and online services.
The M4 Competition coupé returns up to 28.5mpg on average, though you may not get that mile per gallon if you drive it fast. Pre-2018 models have CO2 emissions of about 194g/km, while newer models have much higher emissions by WLTP standards – typically 219–230g/km depending on trim. This means road tax and running costs can be steep compared to regular coupés.
Check for a full service history and examine the condition of brakes, tyres and suspension as these face heavy use in performance cars. Ensure the infotainment and electronics all function correctly, and watch for signs of accident repairs. For extra reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
BMW M4s are built to a high standard, but repairs can be expensive and reliability depends on proper maintenance. Most owners report strong reliability if they get the car serviced regularly at a BMW specialist or dealer, so it’s wise to verify service records when choosing a used model.
