Standard kit includes front and side airbags, stability control and automatic emergency braking. Every car also gets parking sensors and a reversing camera. Higher-spec or optioned models add lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control – worth seeking out if you do lots of motorway miles.

At launch, you had a choice of the petrol 840i (rear-wheel drive, 3.0-litre turbo straight-six, 335bhp) or the diesel 840d xDrive (all-wheel drive, 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, 316bhp). Both use BMW's slick eight-speed automatic. The diesel was dropped in 2022, so newer used cars will be petrol only.

You'll find BMW's Operating System 7 on all cars. Pre-facelift models have a 10.25-inch central screen – from the 2022 facelift it's 12.3 inches. A rotary controller makes the digital system easier to use on the move than touchscreen-only rivals. Apple CarPlay, sat nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth and voice control are widely available, and Android Auto was enabled on OS7 cars in 2020. Depending on spec, you'll also find luxuries like a head-up display, Harman Kardon sound system and ambient lighting.

The petrol 840i averages 33–34mpg (WLTP), while the 840d xDrive diesel returns around 40–46mpg. Real-world owners report the petrol range in the high 20s and diesel in the low 40s – respectable for a near-two-tonne GT that sprints to 60mph in about five seconds.

Test the infotainment thoroughly – glitches can be costly to fix. Inspect the alloys and bumpers for parking damage (these cars are wide). Confirm which optional safety packs are fitted, as not all cars have them. A full BMW service history is a big plus, and The AA Vehicle Inspection can catch hidden issues before you commit.

The straight-six engines are tried-and-tested BMW units and generally dependable. Known complaints tend to be electrical – screens, cameras, sensors – rather than mechanical. Running costs are steep, but keep the servicing up to date and the 840 should prove a solid long-distance companion.
