Used BMW 220 for sale

The BMW 220 comes with all of the standard safety features that you could expect, including a broad number of airbags and a full electronic stability control system to help prevent a spin when driving in poor conditions. Though the 220 was never crash-tested by Euro NCAP, the 1 Series - which shares much of its mechanicals with the 220 - gained a full five-star rating when put under the microscope.

The petrol-powered 220i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed automatic. The 220d, meanwhile, uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine which again, is available with either automatic or manual gearbox options.

Standard equipment on the 220 is impressive, with parking sensors, air conditioning and front electric windows coming on all cars. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable on all cars, too, which makes finding a comfortable position much easier. When launched, there were plenty of optional extras to choose from, so check out what’s fitted to the used example you’re looking at. Highlights include heated seats and climate control on base Sport cars.

You can get up to 44mpg from the petrol-powered 220i and there’s not too much of a penalty for choosing the automatic gearbox version, either. The diesel version, meanwhile, can achieve around 58.9mpg. Again, there’s no real downside efficiency-wise for choosing the automatic.

The 220 is solidly made, but we’d still check wheels and tyres for damage or poor repair, and the corners of the bumpers for any signs of bumps and scrapes. Check the front seats for damage to the bolsters, too, as these can quite easily let go and sag. The BMW is a solid choice reliability-wise, but it’s always a good idea to check a car’s history for a full service book and plenty of receipts for repairs which may have taken place. Rear-wheel-drive 220 cars do tend to wear through tyres quickly, so check them over for plenty of tread.
