Overall rating 5/5BMW was on to a winner when it introduced the 1 Series. It was joined soon after by the 1 Series Coupe which, in turn, transformed into the 2 Series. The 218 acts as the entry point to the 2 Series range and brings a mix of performance and efficiency - you’ll find many of them available at AA Cars today, too.

Overall rating 5/5Introduced in 2014, the BMW 2 Series became the replacement for the 1 Series Coupe and made itself a place in the brand’s range proper. Available both as a coupe and convertible, the 2 Series is designed for drivers who want a reasonably compact car which benefits from a healthy dose of style. The 218 sits on the same platform as the 1 Series, but brings a more dynamic look and a slightly sportier driving experience.
While Euro NCAP didn’t crash-test the 218, it’s mechanically identical to the 1 Series which scored a full five stars when put through the rigorous testing regime. It’s equipped with both traction control and electronic stability control and a full setup of airbags to protect occupants should the worst happen. Automatic lights and a tyre pressure monitoring system add to the broad range of safety features you’ll find on board the 218.
Things kick off with the 218i, which uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine whereas the diesel-powered 218d uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit instead. Most versions that you’ll see for sale will get an automatic gearbox - very few will have a manual. Like many BMW cars, the 218 uses a rear-wheel-drive setup.
Entry-level SE cars get standard features such as parking sensors and LED headlights, as well as a 6.5-inch infotainment system which houses media and navigation functions. Rear sensors are a standard feature that’ll help make parking this car easier. Switch to Sport and M Sport specifications and you’ll get larger wheels as well as a sportier exterior design brought through a dynamic bodykit.
Diesel-powered 218d cars will be the most economical, coming with a claimed fuel consumption of 62.8mpg under older NEDC tests. The petrol 218i, meanwhile, should still return up to 52.3mpg combined.
All 218 cars come with alloy wheels, so check these over for damage. BMWs of this type can also suffer from bolster wear on the front seats, so make sure that these aren’t showing heavy signs of age. It’s worth checking to see that the front seats fold easily, too. If you’d like more information about a used car you’re looking at, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. We’ll send one of our trained engineers to take a look at the car and show their findings via a detailed report.
BMW 218 cars are generally reliable, but we’d always make sure to look out for a full service history. Rear-driven BMWs can often wear through rear tyres quickly, too, so make sure that these have a good amount of tread left. If you’re still feeling unsure, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection to help make the process easier.
