There has always been a version of the 3 Series to suit all different types of buyers and the 330 has been there to offer a decent blend of refinement and performance. Earlier on, 330d and 330i models brought a boatload of power for those who needed it, while later on, 330e examples introduced plug-in hybrid technology to the 3 Series for the first time. We’re looking at the latest generation 3 Series which, because it was introduced in 2019, is a common sight on the used market here at AA Cars.
The latest BMW 330 got a five-star rating when it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2019. Testers praised it for adult and child occupant protection, too, recording impressive scores of 97 and 87 per cent respectively. Standard safety equipment includes lane keep assistance and speed assistance, too. There are also many automatic emergency braking functions designed to work in a variety of situations, such as in urban areas.
Diesel 330 models get a 3.0-litre straight-six engine which brings smooth, accurate performance and a decent level of performance. Interestingly, the 330i comes with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, despite the badging. Most come with rear-wheel drive, though BMW’s xDrive system adds in all-wheel drive to those who need it. The 330e, meanwhile, uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine linked to an electric motor and battery. It's capable of between 25 and 30 miles of electric-only running.
All versions come well equipped with automatic lights included as standard alongside front and rear parking sensors and LED lights. Three-zone climate control helps to keep the car at a comfortable temperature, too. You’ll see most 330 models finished in M Sport trim, however, as it brings bigger alloy wheels and specific M Sport suspension which lowers the car’s ride height for a sportier look.
You should still be able to get just over 40mpg from the petrol-powered 330i, while the diesel 330d improves this slightly with 46.3mpg. Both are at their most efficient when doing long distances at a steady speed. BMW claims that you get just over 201mpg from the 330e plug-in hybrid, though you’ll need to be running on electric power for most of the time to achieve this.
All 330 models are high-performance options, which is why servicing is so important. Inspect the car’s history and check for routine maintenance, as well as the replacement of consumables. You should check the rear tyres for wear, too, as these can be expensive to change - particularly on M Sport cars with their bigger wheels. If you’d like a clearer picture of the car you’re looking at, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. We’ll provide a trained engineer to take a look at the car and highlight any mechanical issues they encounter.
When well-maintained, BMW 330 cars should be a reliable option. These engines are tried-and-tested and quite robust as a result, but routine servicing is key to this. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help to clear up any issues you might have.
