Overall rating 4/5When the BMW 1 Series launched back in 2004, it showcased a new and more approachable side to this premium brand. The 118, meanwhile, was a core part of the 1 Series line-up, offering a decent level of performance but with efficiency, which meant it was still viable as an everyday road car. We’re checking out the second-generation car here - introduced in 2011 - as it brings a greater number of standard features and feels just a bit more modern than the original. There are plenty to choose from on AA Cars today, too.
Tested in 2012 by Euro NCAP, the BMW 118 scored a full five-star rating, making it a very safe car for the time. Though safety standards have changed since then, the 118 still comes equipped with lots of technology, including a full electronic stability control system. You’ll find plenty of airbags on board, too, as well as ISOFIX mounting points for a child seat in the rear of the car.
Despite its name, the 118 of this generation comes with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine. However, later on this was replaced by a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit, similar to the one you’ll find in Mini models of the time. The diesel-powered 118d, meanwhile, comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel. It’s available with either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, with all versions sending their power to the rear wheels alone.
The 118 does get a decent amount of equipment, including climate control, keyless start and automatic wipers. You’ll see a lot of used examples finished in popular M Sport trim, however, which incorporates larger wheels and a sportily tuned suspension setup which gives the 118 a lower ride height.
Opt for earlier versions of the 118 and you should get around 47mpg combined, though later versions bettered this with a claimed consumption figure of 53.3mpg overall. Emissions are low, too, so the 118 shouldn’t cost too much to tax. Expect to get even better efficiency out of the 118d, with BMW claiming over 70mpg combined.
The 118 is often a popular choice with ‘sportier’ drivers, so check for signs of heavy wear. Worn-out rear tyres are a clear indicator, as could be a worn-out gearstick. Ensure that the brakes don’t feel too soft and double-check the alloy wheels for damage. As a way of getting extra peace of mind, consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. We’ll send out a trained engineer to take a look at the car and they’ll be able to highlight their findings back to you via a report.
When well looked after, the BMW 118 can be a reliable option. There have been a couple of recalls for this age of 118, so check the car’s history to see that these have been completed. However, if you’re feeling like you’d want more information about a used car you’re looking at, then an AA Vehicle Inspection is here to help.
