The F10-generation BMW 528 uses a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine (from 2012 onwards) or, in earlier models, a renowned 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol. Both offer strong performance, but the six-cylinder is especially smooth and responsive, while the four-cylinder improves fuel economy and emissions.
All BMW 528s are well equipped: expect sat-nav, Bluetooth, DAB radio, dual-zone climate control and a crisp infotainment screen with BMW’s easy-to-use iDrive system. Higher trims or optional packs add leather, heated seats, upgraded sound systems and more advanced connectivity.
Later (2012–2017) BMW 528 models with the four-cylinder engine average around 44-48mpg, while the older six-cylinder cars are closer to 35-40mpg. Motorway driving will see the best returns, though urban usage can push figures lower. Something to consider if you rack up lots of city miles.

BMW 528s are generally rated as reliable, with engines known for long life if serviced regularly.
