Overall rating 4.5/5There’s nothing quite like a BMW 5 Series with a large, refined engine and that’s just what you’ll get in the 530. Most models of this type come with smooth six-cylinder power and it’s this which makes the 530 a great pick from within the 5 Series range.

If you’re after a large, comfortable and practical car, then the 5 Series has always been a key option. Available on both saloon and practical estate - or ‘Touring’ in BMW-speak - the 5 Series is a car that feels particularly at home on longer journeys where its refinement shines through.
The seventh-generation car, which was made between 2017 and 2023, represents the best blend of value with modern-day technology that buyers really want.
As a large executive car, the BMW 530 comes equipped with plenty of safety equipment as standard. Highlights include a range of automatic emergency braking systems designed for a variety of scenarios, as well as an ‘active’ bonnet which can help to reduce the impact of a potential collision with a pedestrian.
The BMW 530, interestingly, doesn’t always come with a 3.0-litre engine, despite the naming. In fact, petrol-powered 530i models of the generation made between 2017 and 2023 used a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine, albeit in a higher state of tune to the 520i model. Switch to the 530d, meanwhile, and you will then get a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel which delivers great performance and efficiency - it’s one of the most popular engines in the range. You can also get 530e and 545e plug-in hybrid models, which bring the opportunity for up to 37 miles of electric-only running.
The 5 Series comes with all of the equipment you could need, including heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control and high-performance LED headlights, so even in entry-level SE spec you shouldn’t be wanting for more features. Many cars will come finished in popular M Sport trim as this brings larger alloy wheels, a sportier bodykit and a lowered ride height for a more purposeful look.
Officially, you’ll get the best possible efficiency from the 530e plug-in hybrid as it carries a fuel consumption of just over 122mpg - though you’ll need to keep it charged up frequently in order to get anywhere near this in the real world.
A good service history is essential with a car like the BMW 530. With a number of complex systems and high-performance engines, keeping them serviced and maintained is key, so we’d always look out for plenty of receipts and service stamps within the car’s book. You may also want to run a history check to make sure it hasn’t been previously written off. You could also consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. With this service, we’l supply a trained engineer to come and look at the car before producing a detailed report outlining their findings. It’s a great way to help inform your buying decision.
When well looked after, BMW 530 cars should prove reliable. Of course, being a larger, more premium vehicle, the 530 will carry more of a premium when it comes to servicing and repairs, so it’s worth factoring this into your budgeting. However, an AA Vehicle Inspection can also help to clear up any questions you might have about a used car you’re looking at.
The BMW 530 has engines ranging from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol through to a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel.
