There’s an all-rounder nature to the BMW 320, which is hard to miss. Whether it’s long-distance journeys, shorter commutes or even family adventures, the BMW 320 is a car to get it done. In typical BMW fashion, this car is still great to drive, too. We’re looking at the version created between 2012 and 2019, too, as it’s a common sight on the used market and one which offers a great level of value.
When crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2012, the BMW 320 scored a maximum five-star rating, showcasing it to be a very secure car overall. You get both front and side airbags as standard, too, and there are ISOFIX mounting points on the outer rear seats, too. A full electronic stability control system comes as standard, too, and you’ll find speed assistance equipped on some cars, as it was an optional extra at the time.
The BMW 320 is available with either a 2.0-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engine, linked to a manual or automatic gearbox. There’s also the option to have the BMW 320 with xDrive, which brings all-wheel-drive capability to the model.
Standard features on the BMW 320 include a 6.5-inch infotainment display which gets all key media and navigation functions, as well as cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity. All cars get climate control as standard, too, which helps to maintain a comfortable temperature in the car. Popular M Sport specification adds in larger alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension and a variety of ‘M’ badges placed both inside and out.
The diesel-powered 320d came with a claimed consumption figure of 72.4mpg, though this was generated under older NEDC testing systems, so real-life figures are likely to be less. Switch to the petrol-powered 320i and you should see in the region of 45mpg during mixed driving.
The BMW 320 is a largely reliable model, but diesel versions come equipped with a timing chain instead of a traditional belt, so you should listen out for any odd ticking or metallic noises while the car is running. A replacement could be expensive. If you don’t feel comfortable looking at the mechanics of a car, then let a trained engineer check it out for you via an AA Vehicle Inspection service.
The BMW 320 is a largely reliable vehicle, while a solidly made interior should stand up to the test of time. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help in this area and take away some of the mystery from purchasing a used car.
