Overall rating 4.5/5The BMW 650 is built for long-distance comfort, giving you swift V8 power with a smooth, refined drive. Across the 6 Series range – including the sporty 650i Coupe, the more practical Gran Coupe and even the versatile GT hatchback – you’ll find a quiet cabin, quality materials and a layout designed to make longer journeys easier. The generation most UK buyers will come across was sold between 2011 and 2018, with the 650i standing as the flagship petrol model. You’ll pay far less than you would for a Jaguar XK or Mercedes CL, but still get serious straight-line pace alongside day-to-day practicality. Today, the BMW 650 is remembered for its strong V8, generous standard kit and true grand touring ability.
You’ll get a wide range of safety gear: traction and stability control, multiple airbags and adaptive cruise control. Later models may also include lane-departure warning, parking sensors and automatic emergency braking.
The BMW 650i runs on a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8, delivering 444 hp and launching from 0–62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Alternative six-cylinder engines and diesels are available elsewhere in the 6 Series, but only the V8 sits behind the 650i badge.
Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, leather seats and BMW’s wide-screen iDrive with satnav, Bluetooth and premium audio. Heated seats and parking sensors are typically included too, so you’re comfortable and connected.
Official figures for the BMW 650 suggest around 27mpg combined, and real-world testing often shows around 20–21mpg in mixed driving. Some long motorway trips can stretch that to 28mpg, but expect lower results once you start pushing it hard. Something to keep in mind: CO2 emissions are a bit high for the class, which means higher road tax.
Check for a full service history and ensure the oil has been changed regularly – these V8s need care. Test all infotainment and electronics, as some older models experience glitches. Carefully inspect the wheels and suspension, especially on M Sport models with larger alloys. For peace of mind, book The AA Vehicle Inspection.
BMW 650's V8 and gearbox are generally durable, but running and repair costs are higher than average. Electronics and suspension components are common weak points, so the best results come when you choose a well-maintained example with full documentation.
