Overall rating 4/5The BMW 325, part of the iconic 3 Series, is both rewarding and reliable, offering drivers space, safety and sharp handling in equal measure. Available since the late 1990s, in several versions across many model generations, the 325 most frequently appears as a saloon or estate car. Notable examples include the E46 (from 1998 to 2005) and E90 (from 2005 to 2013). Compared with rivals like the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, the BMW 325 stands out for its well-balanced rear-wheel-drive layout, refined straight-six petrol power and inviting interior. BMW stepped up the safety and technology on later models, such as the F30 range (from 2012 to 2019). Used 325s from this era are especially appealing for families and business drivers.
Most BMW 325s come with stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), multiple airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts. Later models include advanced safety features like emergency braking, lane departure warning and parking sensors. Euro NCAP rated the 3 Series highly for occupant safety.
Earlier BMW 325s feature a smooth 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, with improved output and efficiency from 2005. The 325d is a rare diesel alternative. Petrol engines are noted for performance and refinement, while diesel versions combine power with better fuel economy.
Recent BMW 325s feature iDrive infotainment with satnav, Bluetooth, USB ports and DAB radio. Earlier models had CD players with auxiliary input and an LCD screen. Comfort and technology features have evolved throughout the 325's production, especially on higher trims.
For petrol 325 models, expect real-world averages of 32 to 38mpg. The 325d diesel is more efficient, with consumption from 44 to 50mpg. These figures are competitive for their class, though not as frugal as more recent rivals with smaller engines.
Check for a full service history. Watch out for oil leaks, cooling system wear and any dashboard warning lights, especially on older models. Listen for suspension noise and test all the electronics. For added peace of mind, book an assessment with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
BMW 325 reliability is generally good with proper maintenance. Most issues are age-related, like electronics, suspension bushing and cooling system wear. Later models are better for trouble-free ownership, especially with regular main-dealer servicing. Proper upkeep helps ensure a long and dependable life.
