The BMW 420 comes with all the expected standard safety kit. This includes a number of airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring. Furthermore, the 4 Series coupe scored a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2019.

The 420i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol, while the 420d gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel that offers brisk performance with good fuel economy. Some 420 models are available with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Most BMW 420s offer the iDrive infotainment system with a touchscreen featuring an intuitive rotary controller, digital instruments, DAB radio and navigation, plus Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. M Sport models can add flashier trim and more tech, like adaptive suspension and upgraded sound system.

The 420i petrol returns between 40–44mpg, depending on the year and driving style, while the 420d diesel achieves up to 60mpg in real-world use.

As you'd expect from BMW, 420 models are well built and generally reliable, provided the vehicle has been maintained to manufacturer standards. Some owners report occasional electrical issues or sensor faults. Earlier 420d models with the N47 engine also suffer from premature timing chain wear. It’s also worth noting that, being a premium German brand, parts tend to be on the expensive side.
