Overall rating 4.5/5The Peugeot 2008 is a compact SUV based on the regular 208. With efficient engines and a raised ride height, the 2008 is a great option for drivers looking for something a little different, yet this quirkiness is backed by good standard features and a well-made interior.

Overall rating 4.5/5There have been two generations of 2008, but the one that you’ll see most often on the used market is the first-generation car which kicked the model derivative off. It was one of the first entries into the compact SUV segment, too, taking the standard 208 and adding in a raised suspension setup.
As a result, the 2008 can feel more confidence-inspiring to drive than the standard hatchback upon which it is based. However, because it’s still compact, the 2008 remains easy to park and live with on a day-to-day basis.

Peugeot 2008 models are largely well-equipped safety-wise, though you’ll have to look out for facelifted models - produced from 2016 - if you want an even greater level of security as this age of car gained autonomous emergency braking designed exclusively to urban use. It’s a big plus-point for drivers who mainly motor around the town and city. However, even versions from 2013 gained a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with an 88 per cent score for adult occupancy safety being impressive.
The Peugeot 2008 is available with a good range of engines. In terms of petrol power, things range from a 1.2-litre three-cylinder to a larger 1.6-litre version. Diesel power comes in the form of a 1.4-litre and a later 1.6-litre version introduced in post-2016 cars. There’s also the option of other manual or automatic gearboxes. Lower-powered cars tend to get a five-speed manual, whereas more powerful versions have either a six-speed manual or automatic. A clever ‘GripControl’ system is there as an alternative to four-wheel-drive on certain models.
All versions of the 2008 get good levels of standard equipment, though its post-2016 cars get more modern features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity systems. That said, all versions still come with air conditioning and cruise control while higher-spec versions - such as Active and Allure - add in larger wheels and rear parking sensors, among other features.
All versions of the 2008 should prove inexpensive to run, with even the thirstiest of petrol still able to achieve over 47mpg. Automatic versions will be slightly less efficient, so opt for manual versions if you want the best possible fuel economy. Diesel 2008 cars are particularly efficient and are claimed to return up to 76mpg. Pre-facelift models will be heavier on fuel, but not by too much.
Some models of the 2008 come with a lighter interior trim, so make sure that this hasn’t been damaged or marked. Plus, those cars fitted with GripControl need dedicated all-season or winter tyres to work properly, so check to see that these have been fitted. If you’d like more information on a car, you’re looking at then an AA Vehicle Inspection can provide greater clarity through a detailed report.
Some owners have reported electrical issues with their 2008 models, so make sure that all major functions are working correctly. The automatic gearbox can sometimes be prone to lumpy gearchanges, too, so take a test drive to see that this is working as it should. An AA Vehicle Inspection can help to give a little extra information on a used car purchase, too, and there are different packages to suit your budget and requirements.
The Peugeot 2008 is available with petrol engines ranging from 1.2- to 1.6-litres, as well as diesel in capacities going from 1.4- to 1.6-litre.
