Overall rating 4/5The Peugeot 108 was introduced as a response to a need for lower-priced, uncomplicated city cars. It was also the product of a partnership with other manufacturers, which is why it is mechanically identical to the Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1.

Overall rating 4/5The 108 was, for many years, the smallest car offered by Peugeot. With small-capacity engines the 108 proved very popular among first-time drivers, as well as those looking after a compact runaround that was easy to park and cheap to maintain,
It remains a common sight on the used car market, too, and though it may not be the most practical option the 108’s low running costs make it great for those drivers looking to save money.
The Peugeot 108 gets a good range of airbags, as well as key safety features such as ISOFIX mounting points for the rear seats and airbag cut-off switch so that child seats can be used in the front. The 108 also benefits from an electronic stability control system.
The 108 was only available with two engine choices. Most were fitted with a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 68bhp, though a more powerful 1.2-litre petrol was also available. However, this latter engine was phased out and won’t be found on later models. Most cars on sale come with a five-speed manual gearbox, though some cars were equipped with an automatic gearbox - it’s a rare sight, though.
Entry-level 108 models were kept as simple as possible, but you still get electric front windows, remote locking and cloth seat trim as well as steering wheel rake adjustment. Active-specification cars bring additional features such as air conditioning and folding rear seats. Switch to GT Line and you’ll get satellite navigation included too.
All versions of the 108 should prove good on fuel, with the 1.0-litre engine being rated to a claimed 68.9mpg on the older NEDC testing schedule. Even the more powerful 1.2-litre version should still return up to 65.7mpg. Models made before 2017 will have free road tax, too, thanks to the car’s low emissions.
Because the 108 is popular among first-time and learner drivers, the clutch can be subject to a lot of abuse. Make sure that gears engage properly and that there isn’t any ‘slip’ when pulling away - a new clutch might be required if this is the case. A trained engineer can test-drive a car for you as part of an AA Vehicle Inspection. They’ll be able to highlight some areas of concern for any used car that you’re looking at.
Due to their simplicity, 108 cars are usually quite reliable. Some recalls have been issued during the car’s time on sale - relating to a failing steering column and faulty stitching on the rear seatbelts - so double-check that these issues have been sorted before purchase. An AA Vehicle Inspection can help to provide a clearer picture of any car you’re looking at, too, so check out the available options via our website today.
The Peugeot 108 was available with two petrol engines, in the form of 1.0- and 1.2-litre units.
