Overall rating 4/5It’s best known for generous cabin space, affordable running costs and a reassuringly safe drive – a great choice for all sorts of UK journeys. Launched in 2001 as Peugeot’s answer to the family hatchback, it was available as a five-door hatchback, estate, and coupe-convertible. The 307 won European Car of the Year in 2002 for its clever use of space and improved safety features. The 2001–2007 generation received a 2005 update improving styling, trim levels, engine options, and reliability issues. It competes with the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, and Volkswagen Golf, trading sporty driving for comfort, quiet engines, and good value, especially in diesel models. Earlier models are known for some reliability concerns including suspension wear, electrical quirks, and early engine faults, so checking service history is important when buying used.
The Peugeot 307 achieved a 4-star Euro NCAP rating for adult occupant protection in early crash testing. All models come with multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and in most trims, electronic brake distribution. Some later models have side airbags and Isofix child seat belts.
The 307 began with 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines and a selection of diesels. From 2005, there were improved HDi diesels (1.6 and 2.0 litres, with 90-136bhp) and more refined petrol options. The 1.6 HDi diesel is favoured for best performance and economy, while the 1.4 petrol is less suited to long journeys.
Most Peugeot 307s offer remote central locking and electric front windows. Entry versions are basic, but higher trims come with air conditioning, CD stereo systems, and steering-wheel audio controls. Later and better-equipped models might also have a multi-function trip computer.
Diesel variants are especially efficient, with the 1.6 HDi averaging over 50mpg in real-world driving. Petrol engines vary; a 1.6 petrol typically returns around 40mpg, while the larger 2.0 petrol is thirstier at closer to 34mpg on average. Servicing costs are competitive across the range.
Check all electrical features, especially indicator stalks and dashboard functions. Avoid early 1.4 petrol models with known head gasket issues, and test the suspension for knocks or instability. Confirm all recall work is complete by reviewing the service history. For added reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection before buying.
The 307 improved after its first few years, with the 2005 facelift bringing better electrics and fewer faults. Earlier examples may have niggles with electrics, suspension and interior finish. Later cars, especially diesels, are more robust but still benefit from full service records and careful previous owners.
