With its spacious interior, sharp looks and economical engines, the 408 delivers comfort and value for families and drivers looking for something a little different. The Peugeot 408 combines SUV road presence, hatchback practicality and saloon comfort in a single, eye-catching package. UK drivers appreciate its roomy boot, upmarket interior and selection of efficient engines. Debuting in late 2022, the current-generation 408 is a newcomer in Peugeot’s line-up, sharing its platform with the 308 hatchback and 3008 SUV but featuring its own unique, fastback silhouette. This generation offers petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid power, with a fully electric e-408 arriving soon – a great choice for anyone looking to reduce their fuel costs. Compared with the more upright Peugeot 3008 or the lower, smaller 308 hatchback, the 408 carves out its own space as a distinctive, efficient family choice with a premium edge.
All Peugeot 408 models come equipped with advanced safety tech, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and adaptive high beams. Higher trims add features like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. The 408 shares its main components with the Peugeot 308, which has a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating (Euro NCAP, 2022).
You’ll find three main power options: a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine, a 1.2-litre mild hybrid, plus two plug-in hybrid models (180 and 225) that use a 1.6-litre petrol paired with an electric motor. All engines use an automatic gearbox. The plug-in hybrids are especially suited for urban and company car use.
The 408 gets Peugeot’s i-Cockpit set-up with a 10-inch central touchscreen, digital driver’s display, navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range. Climate controls are integrated into the touchscreen—easy for some, fiddly for others. Higher trims offer a 3D digital instrument cluster and added interior luxuries.
The 1.2-litre petrol returns up to 48.1mpg (WLTP), while the plug-in hybrids can manage over 200mpg if you keep the battery charged, and offer up to 40 miles of all-electric range. Real-world economy can vary, especially for plug-in hybrids in mixed driving or cooler weather.
Look for evidence of regular servicing, especially on hybrids. Check all infotainment functions, climate controls and charging cable condition if it’s a PHEV. Inspect for uneven tyre wear and test the seating comfort, as the cockpit set-up won’t suit everyone. For peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Peugeot 408 is too new to appear in many long-term reliability surveys, but Peugeot as a brand performs well, ranking ninth out of 29 in recent UK owner polls. Reported issues are below average for this class. As the 408 shares much with the proven 308 and 3008, dependable running should be expected.
