Overall rating 4.5/5The 208 replaced the popular 207 in 2012, donning a likeable design with a small footprint and all other makings of a perfect city car. Despite being a cheap city car, the 208 offered a comfortable and refined drive with handling and ride that cannot be faulted. These traits pushed it towards becoming a popular seller for Peugeot.
Not too soon after, Peugeot launched the updated version of the 208 with a fresh design language and a distinct family grille. This generation also brought in improvements to all key areas with the most important one being the choice of more powertrain options, especially the ones for the fuel conscious. In its present avatar, the 208 can be what you like – a petrol, frugal diesel or an all-electric. And as a used buy, especially for small families and new drivers, the 208 is a likeable car and one that does everything right without putting up a fight.

The key safety features of the new Peugeot 208 are multiple airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD, headlights with high beam assist, multiple airbags, adaptive cruise control, driver attention warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, etc.
The Peugeot 208 has been offered with a plethora of engine options since it first debuted in 2012. The hatchback was initially available with petrol and diesel engines, while the current generation is also available as an all-electric. The popular petrol engines are 1.0 and 1.2-litre while the 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6-litre are the common diesel engines on offer.
Since 2012, the Peugeot 208 has been equipped with numerous technology and infotainment features despite being an affordable hatchback. Touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, digital instrument cluster, and Bluetooth support are some of the highlights.
The fuel consumption of a Peugeot 208 can vary based on the powertrain. For the base 1.2-litre petrol engine, Peugeot claims approximately 50-53 mpg whereas the 1.5-litre diesel BlueHDI is extremely fuel efficient delivering between 65 and 74 mpg. When it comes to the e-208 electric, Renault claims a maximum range of 217 miles, which is not bad for a small city car.
The Peugeot 208 is a popular model, there are plenty of used examples for sale. So, we suggest waiting for the right car, at the right price. Some good signs include a service history, engine and gearbox in right condition, good body condition, and absence of any visible corrosion to bodywork and the underside. However, checking a used 208 can get tricky, especially if it’s an old model. Since it is popular among new drivers, the 208 models can be subject to a bit of abuse. The AA Vehicle Inspection might come in handy for these cars, Our experts will inspect the car for you, helping you find out exactly what you are buying, or if you should walk away from it. It’s that easy.
Peugeot 208 cars have had some reliability issues in the past, specially with the first generation. Earlier cars with the 1.2-litre Puretech petrol engine had issues with the timing belt whereas the diesel engines were known to be reliable. Some owners have also reported electrical issues and infotainment issues, once again, specific to the first generation 208. The second-generation 208 is reportedly more reliable and if budget permits, we definitely recommend that over the first-generation models.
The Peugeot 208 has been on sale with numerous engine sizes over its production years for different markets and preferences. Some of the popular engine sizes are 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, petrol and 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 diesel engines.
