Overall rating 4/5The Peugeot 306, launched in 1993, made a name for itself with sharp handling and handsome styling. This hatchback (and later estate, saloon and cabriolet) proved to be a hugely dependable drive with a range of trims and engines to choose from. The 306 had a significant facelift in 1997 and ran until 2002, when it made way for the larger 307. It stands out for affordable maintenance, reasonably low running costs, and roomy boot space.
Safety spec on the Peugeot 306 is very basic by modern standards. Things like passenger airbags only appeared as standard in 1999 and the likes of anti-lock brakes were optional on early cars. Euro NCAP only gave the car three out of five stars in crash testing.
The 306 offers a variety of lively petrol and diesel engines. These include 1.4-, 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrols, plus the much-praised 1.9- and 2.0-litre diesels. In later years, the range included stronger HDi diesel options for improved performance and efficiency.
On the tech front, the 306 keeps things simple. Expect basic radio and cassette players and manual windows in some trims. On higher-spec or later models, remote central locking and air conditioning appear.
Diesels are known for their excellent economy, with many owners reporting over 50mpg with careful driving. Petrols often return between 35 to 45mpg, depending on engine and driving style.
Look out for electrical faults, worn suspension, leaky cooling systems and rust. Check the service history as regular servicing is key for engine longevity. A thorough examination via The AA Vehicle Inspection service can help spot potential issues before you commit.
When well maintained, the 306 is impressively reliable – particularly the diesel models, which are known to cover big mileages. Many owners report few major failures beyond normal wear and tear, but age-related issues can occur.
