Overall rating 4.5/5Known for its supple drive and supportive seats, this is a car for those who want calm travels and purposeful practicality. The Peugeot 407 made its mark as a large family car, sold in the UK from 2004 to 2011. Offered as a saloon, estate (SW) and even a two-door coupé, it’s a favourite among drivers who value roomy interiors, a quiet drive and advanced safety at an accessible price. As a replacement for the well-liked 406 and predecessor to the 508, the 407 stood out with its bold styling and high Euro NCAP safety scores, keeping pace with rivals like the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra. Facelifted in 2008, most models found in the UK are diesels, due to their blend of performance and strong fuel economy. Key features include generous space, a 5-star crash rating and a smooth, stable drive – strengths that make the 407 a lasting choice for family or business use.
Safety was always a strong suit for the 407. It boasts front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, electronic stability control (ESC) and a very strong crash structure. The 407 received a full 5-star Euro NCAP rating for adult occupant protection, making it a reassuring choice for families.
The Peugeot 407 came with a wide range of engines, from 1.8 to 3.0-litre petrols, and 1.6 to 3.0-litre HDi diesels. Most used UK models are 2.0 or 2.2-litre diesels, but there are also punchy V6 petrol and diesel engine options, especially on later or coupé models.
Most 407s left the factory with air conditioning or climate control, cruise control, electric windows, and basic trip computers. Higher trim levels brought rear parking sensors, built-in navigation, and premium audio systems, but the interface is simpler than in newer cars.
Fuel economy varies by engine, but the popular 2.0 HDi diesel models manage around 47 mpg combined. Petrol versions return lower figures, from about 32 to 39 mpg combined, so choosing a diesel makes sense for higher-mileage drivers.
Look for consistent service history, especially for timing belt changes on diesel models. Check that all electronics work and inspect for wear on suspension parts. Always consider a comprehensive inspection like The AA Vehicle Inspection to make certain that everything's in order.
With regular care, the 407 can be a dependable partner. Engines are proven, especially the diesels, but be aware that electrical niggles are not uncommon and V6 diesels can be costly to fix if neglected. Well-looked-after examples, though, tend to shrug off big issues and offer lots of car for the money.
