Overall rating 4/5The Peugeot 206 CC (Coupe Cabriolet), introduced in late 2000, brought convertible motoring to a wider audience with its electric hard top and competitive pricing. Compact and practical, it's ideal for agile city driving and weekend open-top fun. Compared to rivals like the Ford StreetKa and Vauxhall Tigra, it offers good used market availability, strong diesel engines, power windows, alloy wheels, and air conditioning. Overall, it is an affordable and stylish drop-top option.
The Peugeot 206 CC features twin front airbags on the smaller engine variant and four on the 2.0-litre. Anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX child seat points came as standard; however, as with many older convertibles, do note that a roll-over protection system is not present.
206 CC models were offered with 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines, alongside a later 1.6 HDi diesel. Performance varies, with the 1.6 petrol suited to urban driving, while the 2.0-litre offers a livelier pace. Diesel models are reasonably strong and frugal.
Expect the basics here, with CD players, electric windows, remote central locking and manual air conditioning. Higher trims add leather and/or sports seats. Satnav and Bluetooth were not common options in this era, so you might need to rely on aftermarket add-ons.
Petrol versions of the Peugeot 206 CC return between 35-40mpg in mixed use, while the 1.6 HDi diesel can achieve an impressive 55-60mpg. Real-world figures will depend on driving style and whether the roof is up or down, as this affects the car's aerodynamics and wind resistance.
Look out for electrical gremlins, especially with the hard-top mechanism and central locking. Check for leaks around the roof seals and dampness in the footwells. Be alert for problems with automatic gearboxes, as this was a known issue. For extra peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
Reliability for this Peugeot is mixed – mechanical parts are generally sound, but electrics (especially the roof) can cause headaches. There were several recalls upon first release, though these should have been resolved over the course of time. Expect some quirks as part of the 206 CC ownership experience.
