Overall rating 4/5There have been three generations of Peugeot 308, but the one you’ll most likely see within the used market is the second-generation car, made between 2013 and 2021. It built on the success of the first model but added a sleeker look and more standard equipment.
With a comfort-focused approach and a decent level of boot space, the 308 is a sure-fire hit for family buyers or those after a car that won’t cost too much to run.

When it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2013, the Peugeot 308 was awarded a five-star rating and returned an impressive 92 per cent score for adult occupant safety, as well as a 71 per cent score for child occupant protection. A suite of airbags combines with standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a speed assistance feature to make the 308 as safe as can be.
The Peugeot 308 engine range starts with a compact 1.2-litre petrol engine in two states of tune, as well as a larger turbocharged 1.6-litre unit for drivers who want a bit more punch. There’s a 1.6-litre diesel, too, though this was replaced in 2015 by a more efficient 1.5-litre alternative. Then, there are larger 2.0-litre diesel engines available in two states of tune.
All versions of the Peugeot 308 come well equipped as standard, with entry-level cars featuring LED daytime running lights and cruise control. Bluetooth connectivity is included on these cars, too. Move up the trim levels and you’ll find more features being added. Active-specification cars get dual-zone climate control and 16-inch alloy wheels, while Allure models have 17-inch alloys, front parking sensors and a reversing camera.
It’s the diesel-powered 308 models which will return the best fuel efficiency, bringing up to an impressive 91.1mpg under the older NEDC tests. However, all diesel versions should be able to achieve around 70mpg. When it comes to the petrol, you should still be able to see 57mpg from most models with only sportier GTI versions being heavy on fuel.
The 308 is a popular family car so make sure the interior isn’t showing any signs of wear and tear. Plus, the 308 is ideal for the city, so double-check for damaged alloy wheels or scraped bumpers. If you’d like a more in-depth look at any car you’re considering, then an AA Vehicle Inspection could help. A trained engineer will check out any car you’re looking at before providing a report on some of their findings.
When routinely maintained the Peugeot 308 should prove reliable. Some issues have been put out for the 308, however, covering areas such as non-latching doors and certain software updates. Double-check that your car has had these completed before buying. An AA Inspection can add some extra detail and will help to highlight any issues with a car that you’re looking at.
The Peugeot 308 has a range of engines, spanning from 1.2-litre petrols through to 2.0-litre diesels. Both automatic and manual gearboxes are available.
