Known for its bold looks, comfortable drive and good value, it's a family-friendly alternative to the usual estate car suspects. The Peugeot 508 launched in 2011 as a replacement for the 407 and 607 and marked a new era for the brand's large cars. The second generation arrived in 2018 with even sharper looks, a fastback shape and a tech-laden interior. Both generations come in saloon and spacious estate (SW) versions, with petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options. While the 508 can’t match the interior space of rivals like the Skoda Superb or VW Passat, it looks and feels more upmarket. With its smooth, refined drive suited to long motorway journeys, the Peugeot impresses with comfort, equipment and style – all at a competitive price. If safety, efficiency and a little French flair appeal to you, the 508 should be on your shortlist.
The Peugeot 508 has a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Safety features include six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, speed limit recognition and ISOFIX points. Higher trims add blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and night vision – great for peace of mind on family trips.
Earlier Peugeot 508s featured diesels and turbo petrol engines, most commonly 1.6 and 2.0-litre. From 2018 the range offered efficient 1.2 and 1.6-litre turbo petrols, BlueHDI diesels and plug-in petrol hybrids. There's even a high-performance 360PS hybrid at the top end.
Most 508s feature Peugeot's i-Cockpit digital dashboard, a 10-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, DAB radio, navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Higher trims give you wireless charging, a premium audio system and a handy 360-degree parking camera. Some even have adaptive cruise and heated seats.
Fuel economy varies by engine. Expect around 45-60mpg from the popular diesels and high 40s from the petrols. The plug-in hybrid can achieve over 150mpg on short trips if charged regularly. On high-mileage journeys, diesel versions are especially cost-effective by class standards.
Look for a full service history and inspect electrical systems, as these occasionally have faults. Check for car park dings and wheel scuffs. For hybrids, ensure all charging gear is working. For added peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Peugeot 508 has proven engine quality, and the latest models score well for reliability. Peugeot’s overall ranking is steadily improving, though some owners report minor electrical faults. Regular maintenance goes a long way, and major issues are rare on well-cared-for cars.
