Expert Opinion

A mainstay in the small car class for two decades, the Toyota Yaris is a byword for affordable, safe and reliable motoring. Perhaps unsurprisingly then it has proven a big hit for Toyota, especially due to its lower running costs compared with many rivals. In more recent years we’ve seen the introduction of hybrid models to electrify the supermini market. These are really the Yaris models to go for thanks to their impressive efficiency, though they do hold their value better than standard petrol cars – meaning they’ll be pricier to buy used.

About Toyota Yaris

Replacing the Startlet, the Toyota Yaris was an all-new model that was designed with a global audience in mind. Launched at a time when more people were considering downsizing to small cars, the Yaris reached showrooms in 1999 in both three- and five-door bodystyles. Environmental performance and safety were two of its main priorities and are things that have been carried on through the generations.

A second-generation Yaris was launched in 2006 with a range of versatile touches, with Toyota then launching the third model in 2011 with the option of hybrid technology for the first time. In 2020, a fourth generation reached showrooms, boasting a bold new design, hybrid-only powertrains and a more upmarket interior.

Why buy a used Yaris?

The Toyota Yaris has always been an icon of affordable motoring, from early examples that are now available for less than £1,000 to the latest generation, which is one of the most accessible ways into owning a new hybrid car. It’s not just the attractive starting price, though, as the model has always been offered with efficient engines, and in more recent years, efficient hybrid motors. The latest model, for example, is able to return up to a claimed 68.9mpg, while CO2 emissions of 112g/km are some of the lowest in this class.

Another reason to buy the Yaris is for its safety - it has been a pioneer in showing that small cars can be just as safe as far larger vehicles. Across the generations, this Toyota has always been awarded a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with the latest model being one of the best cars in its class in this respect. It also gets a vast amount of standard safety kit, including adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist and pre-collision braking. You’d typically only find this level of equipment on far larger and more expensive models.

Over the years, the Yaris – and all Toyotas for that matter – have also built up an impeccable reliability record, with the brand’s models known to be some of the most dependable cars on the roads. If you’re unsure as to the reliability of the hybrid system, you should be assured by the fact this Japanese firm has been making hybrids for more than 20 years, with no real issues ever reported.

The Yaris is also a fantastically easy car to drive, especially as a hybrid with its CVT automatic gearbox. Especially for use around town, it makes driving a doddle, while its small dimensions and great visibility help, too. The latest cars even come with a reversing camera as standard, which is ideal if you’re not the most confident at parking.

It’s also a rather stylish choice, not least the most recent model that boasts a striking, angular look and plenty of scope for personalisation – including a two-tone colour scheme.

In short, the Yaris hits all the right notes required in a small car, and is undoubtedly one of the best used cars available in the small car segment.

Yaris updates

  • Toyota launched its Yaris in 1999 as a stylish, well-equipped and safety-focussed small car. It was awarded European Car of the Year in 2000. It was subtly facelifted in 2003.
  • For the second-generation car, which arrived in 2006, the Yaris became more refined and better to drive, while growing in size to accommodate a more spacious interior. It was refreshed in 2009 with cleaner engines and light styling changes.
  • The third-generation Yaris launched in August 2011, featuring a new multimedia system and the option of a hybrid model for the first time on this supermini. The hybrid model would continue to rise in popularity during this generation. It would be revised in 2017 with a bolder front end and new 1.5-litre petrol engine.
  • The fourth-generation Toyota Yaris would arrive in five-door only form, and also only be sold as a hybrid in the UK. It also boasts a more striking design and a raft of new technology. A rally-bred GR Yaris model also arrived, being crowned as one of the best hot hatches of recent years.

What should I look for when buying a used Yaris?

  • Toyota cars are considered to be some of the most reliable vehicles on our roads, while new models come with a five-year warranty, which is expandable up to 10 years when cars are serviced at Toyota main dealers.
  • The latest generation of Yaris is still too new to have any known issues, but should continue to be a dependable choice.
  • Previous-generation Yaris’ 1.4-litre diesel engine is known to suffer from diesel particulate filter (DPF) issues on cars that only do small runs. It can be an expensive issue to sort. Look out for any lights on the car’s dashboard.
