Now one of Mercedes' most popular cars, the mid-size GLC was launched in 2016 as the replacement for the GLK – a car British buyers could never get their hands on, as it wasn't officially sold in the UK. About Mercedes GLC

Slotting beneath the GLA and GLE in the Mercedes SUV range, the GLC arrived in 2016 as the brand's new mid-size 4x4 model. Launched with a range of petrol and diesel engines, the range has since expanded with a flagship AMG model packing more than 500bhp, as well as plug-in hybrids that can travel up to 27 miles on electricity.

The GLC is also offered in a sleeker 'Coupe' bodystyle, sitting alongside the standard SUV, while a 2019 facelift brought a fresher exterior design, more standard equipment and additional technology.

Why buy a used GLC?

Mercedes' models are renowned for their quality, and the GLC is a fine example of this. Its interior is packed with high-quality materials, while newer versions have a lot of technology – including a widescreen touchscreen and superb digital dials, though the latter is only found on higher-spec models.

Though the GLC might command quite a high price, you do get plenty of equipment for your money, with the regular AMG Line models featuring 20-inch alloy wheels, leather sports seats, LED headlights and a reversing camera.

The GLC isn't quite as sporty to drive as some of its rivals, but if you prioritise comfort and refinement, this Mercedes is one of the best options in this class. Even on larger alloy wheels, the ride is comfortable and compliant, and if you do plenty of miles, the GLC's comfort will be welcome. However, there's a very different side to the GLC if you pick the AMG-developed '63 S' version, which packs a huge 503bhp 4.0-litre V8 engine under the bonnet, and transforms it into a raucous and powerful SUV capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in as little as 3.8 seconds.

If that doesn't appeal, though, one of Mercedes' more regular petrol and diesel engines will, with the 'GLC 220d' being an ideal choice for those doing lots of miles, as it can return up to a claimed 46mpg. The GLC is also offered in plug-in hybrid form, with both the petrol 300e model available alongside the diesel 300de. Each is able to travel for a claimed 28 miles when fully charged, and could prove very frugal if charged regularly.

GLC updates

Here's a short history of the Mercedes GLC, which dates back to 2015.

Mercedes revealed the GLC in 2016, acting as its new mid-size SUV, and replacing the GLK, which was never sold in Britain.
In 2016, the sportier GLC 43 model was launched, having been developed by AMG.
Also in 2016 came the GLC Coupe – a sleeker-looking version to join the standard SUV.
For 2017, sports SUV fans rejoiced with the AMG GLC 63, which packed a huge 503bhp 4.0-litre V8 engine.
In 2019 both the standard GLC and Coupe were updated, bringing an exterior refresh and more interior technology.
In 2020 came the launch of the first hybrid GLC models – the 300e and diesel 350de – unlocking lower running costs.

What should I look for when buying a used GLC?

Check for any signs of kerbing damage on the alloy wheels, as this will likely prove costly to rectify.
Listen out for knocks when the car's steering is on full lock, it could point towards issues if there are any noises.
Some owners suffer from squeaking front brakes, and a fresh pair of brake pads is the remedy.
