I live in Australia and the only major letdown for this vehicle is obtaining parts and modifications for offroad 4x4. Outside of that, it boasts the amazing 2.2L FORD Duratoq engine (for those of you who know, you know!) As it is a Landrover, expect to learn some basic mechanical skills or else be prepared to really pay for maintenance. Remember, its mostly a FORD with a fancy brand label slapped on it. You'd be surprised how simple repairs can be despite what mechanics will say about LandRovers. Great comfort, great engine power. Underwhelming bootspace is the only real criticism.

Great car . Supremely comfortable and fast given its weight. Never had a single problem with it over six years. LR should never have stopped making it !!

Well mine was in for MOT yet again yesterday. and yet again sailed through. 254,764miles on the clock. ( a lot of miles.. Ive had all over the world many times and it is used daily as a work vehicle.. Owned it for 12 years now .. has never failed me except for haldex pump, wheel bearings. disks and pads but that's to be expected with all them miles.. regular and good servicing is the key oil changed 2 times a year.. It's economical for a 4x4 and excellent in ALL weather conditions and off road. Brilliant.. and hold values well ..

I have just done a 974 mile trip through a bit of Europe, down the the Slovenia coast ( went off the inbuilt CD nav system, so had to go my trusty garmin). Extremely comfortable and did it on a tank and half of fuel......and at some points I was not hanging about. It is not a new one 106k now but has had an easy life...up to me. The interior has worn well, its an HSE and has stayed clean. Road markings in Europe ( Germany/ Austria) are very poor, good job the headlights are good....better than the MK1's. I am not a fan of heated windscreens, as I can see the elements so that will be going soon, hopefully I can get one with an upper tint ( it needs it). Tyre choice is important, it came with nearly new Chinese landsail tyres, surprisingly quiet and long lasting......tragic aquaplaning qualities though....I will not be testing there winter traction as they will be gone soon as well. For what is a heavy vehicle it pulls and stops well, and thats as standard. I am not expecting to much trouble with it as I look after all my own vehicles. My other Freelander is a 1.8 facelift manual ( people shy away from them them) but it to has been excellent and reliable. Get one while you can, a 2 is better in all ways ( the older ones with less electronics) and look after it correctly.....and use it....and enjoy. A 3/4 size RangeRover for nothing near the price....with 75% of the off road ability of a defender, but a dam site more comfy.

Mad Mad car,, Brilliant..

It has been excellent over 11 years. 231,970 miles on clock.. Just regular servicing. It has towed caravans and trailers all over the world. It has never broke down, In all weathers and conditions. through snow, wind, rains and extreme heat I wish I could still get this model GS td4e.... what a brilliant car... Still pulls like a train amazing . so I will hang on to it till the very, very end..I would say the best 4x4 ever made..

Brilliant drive, it handles all weather no problem at all. Drives through snow without any drama.  The transmission and engine is great, it has plenty of torque and pulls trailers with ease.  It’s very civilised on motorways without rattles, shakes or road noise.  For a 4x4 it’s probably average on running costs.  However, the boot space is disappointingly small for the size of the car, the key fob is terrible - and the cost for repairing or replacing a fob is an absolute joke.  The seats are also horrendously uncomfortable and gives me chronic back pain, it is near impossible to get a comfortable driving position.  There is very little adjustment to rectify this which is a big let down for this car, so I wouldn’t recommend this car if you like comfort.

I bought mine new in 2007 on the strength of good reviews and the knowledge that it was an entirely new and different vehicle from the previous Freelander ( with the external spare Tyre) which was a dog and competed with the 1964 Vauxhall Victor as the worst car ever produced. My 2007 has been 13 years of motoring pleasure. It hasn’t missed a beat except for a radio replacement when under warranty. The only fault is that the boot depth is about six inches too short for luggage, golf clubs etc. I now drive a new Discovery Sport which answers my boot issue ( while still being a compact vehicle) and I’m thrilled with it. I have however kept my 2007 in the family as it’s too good a vehicle to part with.

My first FL2 after 3 FL1's This is one of the best cars I've had, been off road and long motorway trips too, mine gets lots of work so I get it serviced twice yearly, and it pays to look after it,it's never let me down ever, and handles anything easily mud, floods, and even heavy snow isn't a problem at all.All in all a truly fantastic family car that can pretty much do anything you want.Mine has done 167k miles and is as strong as a 20k car nothing major gone wrong servicing costs are a little higher than others but affordable if like me you use Land Rover specialists and stay away from main dealers. It's such a shame LR stopped making them,I'd buy one tomorrow if they did.I'm really impressed with the FL2 and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a brilliant, reliable and very capable easy to live with 4x4.The Discovery Sport is a poor replacement for the FL2 find a well spec'd FL2 with good history, you won't regret it at all.

Bought the FL 2 SE in 2007 with a 2.2 engine. Has by far been the best car i have owned and i have had many being 69 yrs old. Had it originally on a Landrover 4 yr lease and should have changed it in 2011, but as it beat all the others before it including Range Rovers, Disco's, etc I decided to keep it! Still has it's original Exhaust untouched, Never failed an MOT due to regular servicing and alround checks. Averages 34.6 miles to the gallon, driving in all situations. Has all the qualities of an excellent vehicle, have done several long journey's 7 hrs plus non stop and felt very refreshed on arrival. It is an alround great comfortable car to drive and it performs well too. A great car to own.

I live in Australia and caravan. I bought my Freelander in 2915 at three years old. It’s done 120,000 kilometres and is regularly serviced by the Land Rover Dealer. I love the car as it drives well, tows well and is finished well. But, if I have an issue it’s the regular leak repairs to the diff and Haldex unit. I am currently waiting parts to attend to the haldex...again. Don’t know if it’s the car or the dealer

i got mileage 191000miles and engine is Briliant no sign of weakness, turbo has been remanufactured at 180k and I got full service history and feels like engine easly will do 250k I think is crucial to change oil on time and car won't let you down bad side all parts expensive.

I bought the car from a dealer when it was 1 year old and have had it 9 years. Never been a problem.. just serviced every 12 months . timing belt and water pump changed at 140000 miles..It failed MOT once one headlight aim but soon adjusted.. and I had a new battery 2 years ago, The car has done. 187000 miles without issue, it has towed a caravan across Europe many many times.. snow, ice mud and beast from east was no problem to it. If I could buy a new one I would without and hesitation but they don't make them now, so this one is staying..

I have had this car since new have done 226890 miles yes that's right 226890 miles regularly serviced at Land Rovers and now over past 4 years with a AA approved Jaguar Land Rover independent who meticulously looks after my car it's been very reliable I make sure it has a good run to keep engine clean have fuel conditioning put in tank on servicing to keep fuel lines and injectors clean had auto transmission changer at 190000 miles and various other part during servicing as you would expect the bodywork is black with black privacy glass and looks like it has just come out of the showroom I love driving this 4×4 and after driving for long hours you can get out and still feel fresh, after 11 years of driving my LR I look forward to the next 11 years with it.

I cannot begin to give these car high enough praise. I bought the car in 2010. since then it has had 2 issues, over the 9 years.. The haldex pump failed at 99000 miles. but that was easy put right. and apart from normal service things like oil and filters, tyres and brakes nothing else has been a problem. timing belt was changed at 120.000 miles and now has done 157,000 miles without issue. No rot. engine still powerful and very strong and pulls like a train. very strong chassis and it is ultra capable of towing anything.. In winter the beast from the east no problems and went anywhere .. once i learned how to use the 4 wheel drive knob in the center.. The car is still going strong and starts and drives, first time everytime. It has been brilliant. what more can be said.

Needed another dog car and having a velar wanted to stay with landrover, lovely looking motor very spacious and easy to drive, yes it uses a bit more fuel around town but it's a sturdy 4x4,low insurance and low tax compensates the fuel cost, fantastic for long journeys very comfortable.

The Freelander 2 is a very nice car to drive with its high seating position looking down on the road. My 2007 model is the 2.2 HSE TD4 which is quite a heavy car so its not great on fuel consumption. Expect 27mpg on short journeys & up to 37 on long runs. The main issues started after 90,000 miles with the clutch needing changed at 95,000 due dual mass flywheel failure. Timing belt was changed at 100,000 miles. Brake calipers were all changed due to seized pistons. All 4 tyres changed. Expect about 20,000 miles out of a set as all 4 wear equally due to the 4 wheel drive. Other minor issues were: Intercooler pipe split, handbrake levers need to be stripped down and regreased as they seize up. Back door release switch corrodes & stops working due to water ingress. Parking sensors stopped working. Poor rust proofing underneath leads to heavy corrsion if the car is left ouside all the time. This is very disappointing for a car which is mean to be used offroad. I used the car twice during fairly severe winters & it copes very well in the snow. Overall the car seems to have been fitted with strong engine which pulls well.
