With up to seven seats and sensible features throughout, it's all about making your daily driving calm and uncomplicated. The Skoda Kodiaq is Skoda’s largest SUV, designed to bring a sense of leisure to everything from the school run to long motorway trips. Launched in 2016 as a five and seven-seater, it quickly made a name for itself being a great value option. A second generation (2024-onwards) jazzed up the formula by introducing even more space, smarter tech and a plush, premium feel inside. Against rivals like the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Peugeot 5008, the Kodiaq stands out for the thoughtful little details (like an umbrella in the door) and quiet, refined driving. Older models offer a choice of petrol and diesel engines (including lively 1.5 TSI petrols and reliable 2.0 TDI diesels). Newer Kodiaqs add a plug-in hybrid option into the mix, with the petrol-powered versions introducing a mild hybrid option too. No matter which iteration you plump for, it's a car that makes everyday family life easier, safer and calmer.
Recent Skoda Kodiaqs come with a full suite of safety systems as standard. These can include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and automated emergency braking. Newer models bring Turn Assist, Crossroad Assist, and Exit Warning too. Most versions score handsomely in Euro NCAP safety ratings for overall protection.
Earlier (2016–2023) Kodiaqs offered a range from 1.4- and 1.5-litre turbo petrols (TSI), to 2.0-litre turbo diesels (TDIs), plus a performance vRS variant. The latest generation (from 2024) provides 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrids, 2.0-litre diesels (in two power outputs), and a 1.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid. Power and efficiency both improve in the latest models.
Every recent Skoda Kodiaq comes with a large central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and several USB charging ports. Newer cars add a 13-inch infotainment screen, rotary controls for key settings, voice control, and a digital instrument cluster with head-up display. Most trims bring sat-nav, parking sensors and climate control as standard.
Expect 46–53 mpg from the 2.0 TDI diesel, and 37–44 mpg from the 1.5 TSI petrol (real world figures). Officially, the plug-in hybrid can manage up to 71 miles on electric power alone before the petrol engine kicks in. All versions perform pretty well for their size, with competitively inexpensive running costs.
Look for a full service history, ensure that the infotainment and electrical systems work smoothly, and check tyres, brakes and suspension for signs of heavy use (especially on higher-mileage examples). Inspect the rear seats and boot for wear and tear if the car’s been used as a family workhorse. For added peace of mind, book The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
The Kodiaq rates strongly for reliability, often scoring above average in owner surveys. Occasional issues (like infotainment glitches or warning lights) tend to be minor and fixable under warranty. Skoda’s reputation for solid engineering and sensible design stands the Kodiaq in good stead.
