Carl has spent more than 3 decades working on cars and vans, from busy workshops in Stockport and Manchester to the roadside with The AA. He joined The AA in October 2006 and spent 19 years as a roadside patrol, diagnosing faults and carrying out on-the-spot repairs to get members safely back on the road. Since October 2025, he’s been a Maintenance Controller, supporting the upkeep of The AA’s vehicle fleet and sharing the lessons he’s learned from thousands of real-world call-outs.
Carl writes about day-to-day car care, car servicing, MOT basics, common reasons for failures, and the simple checks that help you avoid a breakdown. He holds City & Guilds Level 3 and BTEC Level 3 in motor vehicle engineering, gained Master Technician status with General Motors while in Canada, and has previously been a nominated MOT tester. He also grew up rebuilding Land Rovers with his dad and brother, and still lends a hand with advice when needed. Outside of work, Carl enjoys running, long walks with his 2 springer spaniels, and keeping up with his 3 grandchildren.
