Overall rating 5/5The Volkswagen T-Roc is the brand's answer to the ever-popular compact SUV. Since its launch in 2017, it has grown into a favourite on UK roads thanks to its charming style, smooth engines, and everyday usability. A mid-life update in 2022 further improved its interior quality and added sharper technology, so even used examples feel up-to-date. When matched against rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Ford Puma or MINI Countryman, the T-Roc holds its own. Drivers appreciate its larger boot, refined drive and wide range of petrol and diesel engines. Key features include a high driving position, plenty of personalisation options, and standard safety kit across the range.
Every Volkswagen T-Roc includes a strong set of safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and multiple airbags. Later models add adaptive cruise control and improved driver alert systems. Euro NCAP has rated the T-Roc highly for crash safety, making it a reassuring choice for families and commuters alike.
The T-Roc is typically offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines. Earlier models come with 1.0 and 1.5 TSI petrols and 1.6 or 2.0 TDI diesels. More recent versions offer 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 petrol engines, plus 2.0-litre diesels with different power outputs. There’s even a sporty T-Roc R for those seeking more exciting performance.
Most T-Rocs come with an 8-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and smartphone integration as standard. Higher trims add digital driver displays, built-in sat-nav, wireless phone charging and upgraded audio. A 2022 update added slicker infotainment, voice controls and more connected features.
Fuel economy is reasonable – typically between 35 and 55mpg for petrols, and 45 to over 60mpg for diesels, depending on engine and spec. The 1.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel are the most efficient, while four-wheel drive and automatic models use a bit more fuel. Real-world figures remain competitive for the class.
Look for evidence of regular servicing, especially for diesel versions. Check the condition of large wheels and tyres, as some suffer kerb damage. For 1.5-litre petrols, ask if the ‘kangarooing’ fix has been applied. Also, see if any recall work has been completed. For a thorough assessment, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Most owners rate the T-Roc highly for solid reliability, especially with petrol engines. Common complaints include minor electrical faults and some diesel-related issues, but most cars prove dependable when serviced routinely. In the What Car? Reliability Survey, the T-Roc achieved above-average scores for the small SUV class.
