Overall rating 4.5/5The Phaeton was Volkswagen’s first foray into the world of luxury cars, offering calm, comfort and capability in equal measure. Drivers value its discreet styling, as well as the amount of space for all passengers and driving experience that makes every mile feel easy. Originally launched in 2003, the Phaeton received a facelift in 2007 and further technical updates in 2009. All generations come well-equipped, but long-wheelbase models offer even more rear room for relaxed journeys. Compared to rivals like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Jaguar XJ, the Phaeton puts comfort and value first. Today, it’s defined by robust V6 and V8 diesel engines, high levels of insulation and a wealth of kit even in standard trims.
The Phaeton comes with a suite of safety equipment, including multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control and ISOFIX mounts. Most models feature advanced braking systems and a strong, well-insulated shell for extra reassurance on the road.
Engine choices span refined V6 and V8 petrols, economical V6 diesels, a rapid V10 diesel, and an impressive W12 petrol. Later generations focus on the 3.0 V6 TDI diesel with outputs from 221bhp to 245bhp. Earlier cars offer additional petrol and diesel options, including 3.2 V6, 4.2 V8 and even the 5.0 V10 TDI.
All Phaetons are well-equipped. Standard kit often includes climate control, leather seats, electric and heated seats, advanced audio, satellite navigation (in face-lifted cars), cruise control and parking sensors. Later models add a newer infotainment system and touchscreen controls.
The 3.0 V6 TDI diesel returns up to 33mpg combined, with petrol and V10 diesel versions being less efficient (19–24mpg typical). Long wheelbase and more powerful engines use more fuel, which is something to keep in mind for big-mile drivers.
When viewing a used Phaeton, look for a full service record and evidence of regular maintenance, especially for more complex engines. Test all the electrics and comfort features, as early models have intricate controls. For peace of mind, book a comprehensive inspection like The AA Vehicle Inspection to avoid any unseen surprises.
Phaetons are well-built and engineered to a high standard. Diesel engines, in particular, have a good reputation. That said, their complexity means regular, specialist maintenance is critical to reliability. Look for examples with a careful ownership history for fewer worries.
