Overall rating 4/5The Volkswagen Beetle is designed for drivers seeking individuality along with solid reliability. While its unique appearance turns heads, the Beetle is built on proven Volkswagen engineering, so both newcomers and long-time Beetle fans can drive theirs with confidence. First created as the ‘people’s car,’ the Beetle was reimagined in the late 1990s, then modernised again from 2012 with improved handling, technology and efficiency. It compares closely to vehicles like the MINI Hatch and Citroën DS3, but stands apart with its retro silhouette and comfortable interior. Today’s used Beetles, especially those sold from 2012 to 2018, offer a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, a choice of trims like Design or R-Line, and infotainment that keeps things feeling modern.
The modern Volkswagen Beetle (especially 2012–2018) is fitted with a host of standard safety equipment: driver and passenger airbags, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control and ISOFIX points for child seats. Earlier Beetles scored four stars in Euro NCAP safety tests, so had strong safety ratings for their time.
Used Beetles (2012–2018) offer a broad choice of engines. Petrol options include a 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI, both turbocharged for efficiency or zip. Diesel drivers can pick from 1.6 TDI or 2.0 TDI engines. For those after more punch, there’s even a 2.0 TSI petrol, which comes close to Golf GTI performance.
Later Beetle models come with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity as standard. Design and higher trims add larger alloys, extra speakers and climate control, while the R-Line brings additional sporty details. All controls are logically laid out and feel solid.
Fuel economy varies with engine choice. The 1.2 TSI petrol returns up to 47.9mpg, while the 1.4 TSI averages around 43mpg. Diesels impress – expect near 65.7mpg from the 1.6 TDI and about 57mpg from the 2.0 TDI. Real-world figures may fall a little short depending on use.
Check for bodywork scrapes (especially if the car lacks parking sensors), wheel condition and interior wear, as light materials show marks easily. Some earlier cars had recalls, so check for outstanding work with a local Volkswagen dealer. For peace of mind, consider a full examination through The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Volkswagen Beetle models enjoy a reputation for decent reliability and benefit from proven mechanics shared with the Golf. Some interior materials may wear over time and there have been a few recalls affecting early builds. VW’s performance in reliability surveys is solid, often better than rivals like MINI or Citroën.
