With its large boot, advanced tech and relaxed motorway drive, it’s designed to make your journeys easier. The Volkswagen ID.7 works well if you need space for family life or just want a calm commuter car, offering generous rear legroom and a 532-litre boot, one of the largest in its class. Launched in 2023 as the flagship of Volkswagen’s ID electric range, it features the most up-to-date tech the brand offers. Compared with rivals like the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i5, the ID.7 stands out for rear-seat comfort, long-distance ease, a quiet cabin, low running costs and helpful driver assists, making it a dependable choice for everyday zero-emission family travel.
You’ll get a strong safety package as standard: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking and Matrix LED headlights. A 360-degree camera is available, and Euro NCAP awarded the Volkswagen ID.7 five stars, with particularly high marks for adult occupant protection.
Every Volkswagen ID.7 is electric. The first models (2023) use a 77 kWh battery with a 282 bhp motor powering the rear wheels. An 86 kWh version and a dual-motor GTX are also on the way. You won’t find petrol or diesel options – just smooth, quiet EV power.
All versions feature a 15-inch touchscreen with satnav, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also an augmented-reality head-up display, wireless phone charging and voice control. Most trims include heated, massaging seats and keyless entry, so even the standard models feel well-equipped.
Efficiency is measured in miles per kWh. Officially, the Volkswagen ID.7 manages 3.8–4.5 mi/kWh, giving a real-world range of around 300 miles. With careful driving and ideal conditions, up to 383 miles is possible, but expect less if you’re mostly on motorways.
Make sure the software is up to date, as earlier ID cars had some infotainment glitches. Check battery health and charging speeds, and inspect alloys for kerb damage. For added peace of mind, you could book The AA Vehicle Inspection before making your decision.
Electric drivetrains are simple by design, and Volkswagen’s have proved robust. While some earlier ID models had software frustrations, the Volkswagen ID.7 benefits from improved systems. The main battery is also covered by an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty, so you can feel confident about long-term ownership.
