Overall rating 4.5/5A true 'big car in a little car package', the Up! was a true breath of fresh air when it launched in 2012. Proving small city cars didn't have to mean cheap and low quality, the Up! was – and still is – a brilliant bit of engineering.

First shown in concept form in 2007, the Up! was Volkswagen's idea of the new 'modern day Beetle'. The show car was rear-wheel-drive like the original Beetle, but by the time it evolved into a production car in 2011, it had adopted the more traditional front-driven layout.
Retaining its fun design and small dimensions, Volkswagen offered the Up! in a choice of three- and five-door layouts, while an electric e-Up! would also launch, though we’re focusing primarily on the petrol cars here. Fitted with a range of small and efficient three-cylinder petrol engines, Volkswagen would later introduce the sportier GTI version, which is often considered a modern-day successor to the original Golf GTI.
