Overall rating 4.5/5Well equipped, solidly built and known for its fuel economy, it stands out for efficient diesel performance and everyday comfort – especially important on long commutes. The Volkswagen Golf has been one of the most popular hatchbacks among UK families for decades. The TDI diesel takes the Golf's winning combination of space and practicality and adds punchy but economical diesel engine choices. While it can be pricier than rivals like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra, the Golf TDI’s reputation, style and refinement help make it the more sought-after choice – and hold onto its value in the used market. Features like comfortable interiors, flexible boot space and a wide range of tech (especially on more recent models) really define the Golf TDI today, while the engine line-up covers everything from frugal 1.6-litre diesels to robust 2.0-litre versions with plenty of pulling power for the motorway.
Most Volkswagen Golf TDI models come with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The Mk6 onward adds side and curtain airbags. Mk7 and Mk8 models include options like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and automatic emergency braking.
Volkswagen Golf TDIs are exclusively diesel. Earlier models featured 1.9-litre and 2.0-litre options. The Mk6 introduced the newer 1.6 TDI. Later Mk7 and Mk8 Golfs offered 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI power with varying outputs, from around 105bhp to 170bhp in GTD trim.
Older Golf TDIs may only have air conditioning and basic radio or CD players. Recent models often have Bluetooth and digital radios, plus cruise control and parking sensors on higher trims. Mk7s onward add touchscreens, smartphone mirroring and even digital dashboards.
Efficiency is the Volkswagen Golf TDI's strong point. Official combined figures are from 50mpg (for 2.0 TDI manuals) up to 65mpg and beyond (for 1.6 TDI BlueMotion or newer Mk8s). Real-world economy is usually slightly lower, but your running costs will likely be competitive.
Check for a full service history and for issues with the dual mass flywheel (DMF) and diesel injectors on some older cars. Pay attention to warning lights, clutch operation and electronics. For added peace of mind, why not book The AA Vehicle Inspection?
The Volkswagen Golf TDI is generally a dependable car with regular servicing. Some models (especially around the 2008–2012 window) experienced injector or DMF faults. Later models are more robust, and many owners report high mileage with routine care. Regular maintenance with quality parts is the key to hassle-free ownership.
