Overall rating 4.5/5Its higher seating and clever cabin layout make it a smart family choice, delivering dependability and practicality. The Volkswagen Golf Plus was designed for drivers after a little extra headroom, a raised view, and a bigger boot, all in a car still compact enough for daily duties. Sitting neatly between the standard Golf hatchback and the larger Touran MPV, the Golf Plus is appreciated for its flexible seating, elevated visibility, and solid German build. Available in the UK from 2005 to 2013, the Golf Plus overlaps the Mk5 and Mk6 generations of the Golf, bringing updates in style, technology and engines over time. Compared to direct rivals like the Ford Focus C-MAX or Nissan Qashqai, the VW tends to hold its value thanks to its quality materials and brand reputation. Today, buyers are drawn to its blend of reliability, ease of driving, and adaptable space.
All Golf Plus models feature multiple airbags (including front, side and full-length curtain airbags) plus active head restraints and ISOFIX child seat points. Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and traction control are also standard, underpinning strong crash safety across the range.
The Golf Plus was offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines. Early models featured 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 petrols, while diesel choices included 1.9 and 2.0 TDIs. Later models (post-2009 facelift) introduced improved 1.2 and 1.4 TSI turbo petrols, and efficient 1.6 TDI diesels – most popular for their blend of power and economy.
Most Golf Plus models come with air conditioning, CD stereo and electric windows as standard. Higher trims add features like climate control, upgraded audio, rear parking sensors and, on later cars, the option of a touchscreen and Bluetooth. Top models may also feature Park Assist and cruise control.
Fuel consumption for the Golf Plus varies by engine, but even the basic petrols manage over 40mpg. The popular 1.6 TDI diesel can regularly achieve 55-60mpg, while BlueMotion editions claim above 60mpg – all depending on driving style and conditions. Diesel models also benefit from low CO2 output, falling into the cheaper tax brackets.
Confirm there's a full service history, especially on diesel models, and check for smooth operation of the flexible seating and gearbox changes. Some early diesels had reported fuel pump issues, so look underneath the engine bay for signs of leaks. For an independent review, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
The Golf Plus enjoys a strong reputation for build quality and solid mechanics. Most major components are shared with the standard Golf, which helps with reliability and affordable repair costs. Some 1.6 engines have reported timing chain issues, but overall, with careful previous ownership, the Golf Plus is a dependable pick for low-stress family motoring.
