Overall rating 4.5/5The CC is best known for its sleek appearance, quality interior and good value as a used family car. Launched as the Passat CC in 2008 and later renamed simply CC from 2012-2017, this model blends sophistication with practicality. While based largely on the Passat, the CC adds sharper looks, a better-equipped interior and a more premium feel overall. Inside, you’ll find a high-quality cabin with supportive seats and plenty of kit. Most models come with leather upholstery, sat nav and Bluetooth. The boot is a good size, although the narrow opening is something to keep in mind. Rear headroom is a bit tight due to the lower, coupe-inspired roof, but for most, the CC feels suitably grown up and ready to take on everything from the school run to cross-country journeys.
All Volkswagen CCs come with stability control, multiple airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts. Higher trims often have front and rear parking sensors, and some have a reversing camera, which comes in especially handy due to the sloping rear window. There was a passenger airbag recall for some late models, so check this when buying used.
Engine choices span 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrols plus 2.0-litre diesels, with power ranging from 138bhp to 181bhp across different generations. Most buyers choose the 2.0-litre diesel for its blend of performance and economy. It’s widely available and makes a sensible pick for longer distances.
The CC’s dashboard feels upmarket and functional. Most models come with a touchscreen, Bluetooth, DAB radio and sat-nav as standard. Some higher-spec trims add climate control, leather upholstery and advanced sound systems, but the basic infotainment system is small and less feature-rich than newer rivals.
The 2.0-litre diesel engines are the stars for efficiency – you can expect around 50-60mpg on a combined cycle for most versions. Petrol choices are less economical, usually in the mid-30s.
Look for a full service history and check for completed DSG gearbox servicing if it’s an automatic. Inspect for scrapes on the large alloy wheels and rear bumper, as poor visibility can lead to parking dings. The electronic parking brake and window seals can also be problem points. The AA Vehicle Inspection is recommended for peace of mind.
CC reliability tends to be fair, with most mechanical issues stemming from missed maintenance. The VW brand ranks in the middle overall in major reliability surveys. Go for a model with a solid service history, and it should offer dependable motoring, but as with any used car, careful checking is key.
