Known for comfort, tech and a plush interior, it’s an ideal choice for families and frequent travellers. The Touareg is now in its third generation, delivering comfort, safety, spaciousness, and the latest technology, including a large digital display and infotainment system since 2023. It rivals premium SUVs like the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE, focusing on a spacious five-seat cabin and an extra-large boot, with no seven-seat option. Key features include advanced safety, powerful yet refined V6 engines (petrol, diesel, hybrid), an 810-litre boot, and towing capacity up to 3.5 tonnes. The ride is calm and aimed at relaxed comfort rather than sporty handling, with later generations offering more tech, efficiency and a bolder look.
The Touareg comes with a long list of safety features: adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a raft of airbags are standard on recent models. Euro NCAP awarded it a full five stars for safety and optional extras include night vision and Trailer Assist, making reversing with a caravan or trailer much less stressful.
Latest Touaregs use smooth 3.0-litre V6 engines, available in both petrol and diesel. There are also plug-in hybrid options (called eHybrid and Touareg R), offering reduced emissions and stronger efficiency, especially for short trips. Earlier generations included 2.5, 3.0 and 4.2 diesels, with the third generation (from 2018) moving exclusively to V6 units and hybrids.
Most modern Touareg models feature Volkswagen's impressive Innovision Cockpit, with a 15-inch central touchscreen and a 12-inch driver’s digital display from 2023 onwards. Features include satellite navigation, smartphone connectivity, a premium sound system and full LED lighting, setting the standard for comfort and tech in its class.
Fuel efficiency depends on the engine: expect around 30–35mpg from the diesel V6 in real-world use, a little less from the petrol V6 and up to 100mpg (on short trips) for the plug-in hybrid, provided you charge it frequently. If you do lots of longer journeys, the diesel remains the most economical choice.
Make sure all electric features work, especially the tailgate, seats and sunroof (if it has one). Look for kerbed alloys and marks from tight parking. Regular servicing is vital, particularly for diesels with a DPF. Be alert for warning lights or running issues. For added peace of mind, consider booking a full check with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Touareg has a good track record in owner reliability surveys, but some parts (particularly those shared across the VW Group) can be costly, and smaller issues like sensors or oil leaks have been reported. Most cars are trouble-free with regular maintenance.
