Overall rating 4.5/5The Tucson first arrived in 2004 as a family-focused SUV, at the time launching just with four-wheel-drive. Slotting beneath the larger Santa Fe, it offered plenty of room and a bargain price. Somewhat confusingly the second-generation Tucson was instead known as the iX35 in Europe, before Hyundai returned to the same nameplate as before in 2015. This third-gen model was quite a big step up, bringing more modern looks and a more upmarket interior.
The Tucson has been a core part of the Hyundai range for a number of years, but it’s this third-generation car - made between 2015 and 2020 - which struck a chord with drivers. Well-equipped and comfortable, the Tucson is great for on-the-go drivers who want a car that can do it all. Given its popularity, the Tucson is also an easy car to find on the used market and you should be able to find one that fits your budget.

The Tucson was scored a full five stars when tested by Euro NCAP in 2015. Scores of 86- and 85 per cent for adult and child occupant protection respectively show that this car is very good at keeping those aboard secure in the event of an impact. It gets plenty of standard safety equipment, too, including an active bonnet which can help to cushion the impact for a pedestrian suffering from a collision with the car.
A good range of engines is available with the Tucson, including two petrol engines in 1.6- and 1.7-litre capacities. There is also the option of either manual or automatic gearboxes. A 2.0-litre diesel - available in two outputs - is there as well. In 2018 the engine range was updated with a new 1.6-litre diesel and a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre diesel. You’ll find four-wheel-drive available on certain models, too.
Standard equipment on the Tucson includes Bluetooth connectivity and digital radio, as well as air conditioning. Later versions of the Tucson also started to get a touchscreen and satellite navigation included too. Step up the specifications and features such as dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors are added - though the price for the car does start to rise as a result.
Diesel-powered Tucson cars are the most fuel-efficient, delivering up to 61.7mpg according to older NEDC tests. Higher-powered diesels also have a claimed fuel efficiency of around 57.6mpg. The petrol versions aren’t that fuel efficient, however, and are rated to around 37mpg. Expect four-wheel-drive models to be heavier on fuel, too.
All versions of the Tucson come with a lot of equipment, so make sure that all on-board electrical features work. Double-check that the air conditioning is blowing cool, too, so that you don’t get a nasty surprise when the weather turns warmer. The Tucson’s large size means it can be susceptible to car park damage, too, but if you need more information then an AA Vehicle Inspection can help to give a clearer picture of any used vehicle you’re checking out.
The Tucson has a good reputation when it comes to reliability. This was reflected in the five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty that the car was offered when new. However, when maintained the Tucson isn’t a car that should go wrong. However, that’s not to say that certain cars don’t suffer from specific issues and this is when an AA Vehicle Inspection can help. It’ll highlight any problems with a particular car via a detailed report compiled by a trained engineer.
The Hyundai Tucson is available with 1.6- and 1.7-litre petrol engines, as well as a few diesel powertrains ranging in size from 1.6- to 2.0-litre.
