Expert Opinion

A car that was quite ahead of its time, the Hyundai IONIQ will always be remembered as the first car available with a choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. A perfect option for those looking to switch to something electrified, there's something to suit everyone. Long-distance drivers, for example, should choose the 'self-charging' hybrid, while those doing predominantly smaller trips but that are worried about outright age will find the plug-in hybrid appealing. Meanwhile, the Electric is a perfect option for those wanting to go full-EV in a practical and usable package, though its 184-mile range isn't the longest.

About Hyundai IONIQ

Hyundai was keen to expand its electrified line-up ahead of other manufacturers, and the IONIQ proved to be the statement product. Introduced in 2016, this Toyota Prius rival was the first car to ever be sold as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV, all in the same bodystyle.

Renowned for its efficiency, the IONIQ soon built up a loyal audience, particularly with companies that valued its affordability and reliability. Revised in 2019, it gained styling tweaks, more technology and in the case of the Electric model, a noticeably longer electric range. Hyundai discontinued the IONIQ in 2022, with the 'IONIQ' nameplate being rebranded for a line-up of EVs in different shapes and sizes.

Why buy a used IONIQ?

The main reason for choosing an IONIQ is because of its powertrains. Whether you're wanting a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a full-EV, this model's unique position ensures there's something suitable for most tastes. Even the hybrid (the cheapest version on the used market) is comfortably able to hit 60mpg on most trips if driven carefully. Essentially, all versions bring the possibility to help reduce your running costs, with the IONIQ's streamlined shape also aiding its efficiency.

It's also got a very pleasant interior, and more so than its main rival; the Toyota Prius. The fit and finish is excellent, especially on the later versions updated in late 2019, and it certainly helps to give this Hyundai a more upmarket feel, particularly in the case of top-spec Premium SE cars that feature leather upholstery as standard.

Speaking of standard equipment, all versions come with plenty of kit included, with an eight-inch touchscreen fitted from the offset, along with cruise control and rear parking sensors. Mid-spec Premium models bring LED headlights, heated front seats and keyless entry, while the flagship Premium SE brings high-end touches such as ventilated and electric front seats, and blind spot monitoring.

When the IONIQ 5 was new it was good value, and those savings are carried to the used market as well, and it can be one of the most affordable ways of getting behind the wheel of an electrified car, while still holding its value - you shouldn't need to worry too much about depreciation.

IONIQ updates

Here's a short history of the Hyundai IONIQ, which dates back to 2015.

  • Hyundai announced the IONIQ in 2015 as its new electrified hatchback, being the first car to be offered as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and an EV.
  • The trio of models were shown in full at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Hybrid and Electric models launched in 2016, with the Plug-in following in 2017.
  • The IONIQ line-up was revised in 2019, gaining a new widescreen infotainment design and a refreshed design. The Electric also received a 38.3kWh battery - 36 per cent larger than before.
  • Hyundai ended production of the original IONIQ in July 2022, with the brand focusing its efforts on its new numerically-named 'IONIQ' series, such as the IONIQ 5.

Which used IONIQ should I buy?

Hyundai has offered four trim levels on the IONIQ, with equipment highlights as follows.

Hyundai IONIQ SE Connect

15-inch alloy wheels with aerodynamic alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, automatic lights with high beam assist, rear parking sensors, cruise control, leather steering wheel, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist.

Hyundai IONIQ Premium

Revised 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and start, heated front seats, 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging pad, chrome window surround, chrome effect interior door handles.

Hyundai IONIQ 1st Edition

17-inch alloy wheels, electric parking brake, lane follow assist.

Hyundai IONIQ Premium SE

Chrome exterior handles, privacy glass, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, electric driver’s seat with memory function, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert.

What should I look for when buying a used IONIQ?

  • These cars are predominantly used around the city, so have a look for signs of parking damage and kerbing in particular.
  • Many IONIQs are used as pool cars or taxis, so be aware of cars that might have been unloved.
  • Not so much a fault, but early IONIQ Electric models use a particular small battery. Look out for a model from late 2019 onwards if you want to unlock a longer electric range.
