About Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is a supremely popular, consistently top selling car; not only in the UK, but worldwide. A leader in its class, it has won countless awards, sold more than 15 million models, and yet continues to impress with its driving ability, affordability and style. Right from its very first introduction in 1976 it has been successful, winning motorists over with a drive quality that is unmatched in its class, and its mix of comfort, agility and excitement. It is no wonder then, that it is the most popular car on UK roads.

Why buy a used Fiesta?

By launching the Fiesta in 1976, Ford intended to produce an affordable, entry-level car which could offer more practicality and versatility than its rivals. Succeeding in not only this, but in creating a car which is efficient, affordable and fun to drive, the Fiesta was an instant success, and remains one of the most popular cars in the world.

Throughout its seven generations the Fiesta has offered motorists one of the most exciting drives on the market. Handling is consistently responsive and precise, but offers enough feedback to make tricky, winding roads not only easy to tackle but fun. This ride quality extends to motorways too, where the Fiesta retains a calm composure. Understandably this is more evident in the later models, which overall are smoother and quieter than their predecessors. While in the new models the suspension and space offerings might be slightly better in some of its rivals, the energy of the drive is miles ahead.

More modern Fiestas tend to have an interior with just that little bit more quality than their predecessors, but the finish on all is good, favouring the practical over purely pretty. While in the very first generations space was a definite sales point, they have more recently been overtaken in their class by more roomy superminis. Passenger space however, is good, and there is room enough for four adults. Most spacious of the range is arguably the sixth generation car, while the 300 litre boot in the seventh is adequate, but certainly not market leading.

As it is so popular, performance options are endless, and in the most recent generation there are nine different engines to choose from. Six of these are petrol engines, starting from a meagre 40bhp, but extending to 124bhp. The stand-out of the range though is generally thought to be the 1.0 litre, 99bhp Ecoboost, which packs in a reasonable amount of power along with impressive efficiency. It has CO2 emissions under 100g/km making it exempt from road tax, and fuel consumption returns of 65mpg. Understandably, the more modern the car the more fuel efficient it will be, but even in the earlier models the Fiesta is frugal and efficient.

With so many of them on the roads, you wont be buying a car that is going to stand out by opting for a Fiesta, but this does help when it comes to getting a good deal, as you can usually shop around and perhaps even secure a discount. The Fiesta is a near unbeatable mix of affordability, ride, handling and practicality, and so its no surprise that it continues to be the UK's most popular car.

Fiesta updates

Ford Fiesta

The very first Ford Fiesta was launched in 1976. Today it is the most popular car on UK roads.

Here's a brief history of the Ford Fiesta, starting in 1976.

  • The first Fiesta was introduced in 1976. The Ford board initially voted to call it the Bravo, but Henry Ford II overruled them by picking the name Fiesta. A right hand drive Fiesta only arrived in the UK in 1977.
  • The Fiesta wins the British Design Council Efficiency Award in 1978.
  • The millionth Fiesta was produced at the Ford Valencia Assembly Plant in 1979.
  • The second generation Fiesta was launched in 1983, and featured a revised front end and interior. The Fiesta Mk2 was more fuel efficient and included a 1.0, 1.1 and 1.3 litre engine option.
  • The first Ford Fiesta to run on lead-free petrol was launched in 1984.
  • In 1987 the Fiesta recorded its best sales year in Britain, selling 158,000 cars.
  • In 1989 the third generation Fiesta was launched, coming in five doors for the first time. It was the very first small car on the market to offer ABS.
  • 1991 saw over 620,000 Fiestas sold across Europe, making that year the car's best for European sales.
  • The Fiesta Mk5 was launched at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1999, and two years later - again in Frankfurt - the Mk6 is introduced.
  • In 2008 the Fiesta Mk7 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
  • The Fiesta celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2011 by reaching the milestone of 15 million cars sold worldwide that same year.

What should I look for when buying a used Fiesta?

The Ford Fiesta is one of the top performing cars in its class.

What to look for in a Ford Fiesta
  • Have a walk around the outside of the car, checking for signs of rust and corrosion, particularly around damage-prone areas such as the doors and wheel arches.
  • Check all electrics inside the cabin work such as air conditioning, interior lights and any electric windows. Do the same with all headlight and brake lights, too.
  • Check that the cam belt has been changed - after 100,000 miles or 10 years at least.
  • If your Fiesta starts to misfire, has trouble starting, or the engine management light stays on when driving, it could mean that the coil pack is faulty and needs replacing.
  • Some of the later generation diesel Fiestas have been known to have problems with their diesel particulate filter getting clogged. This happens often when the car is only used for short local journeys and would be indicated by a warning light staying on, or the engine under-performing.
  • When out on the road listen for any rattles or noises which could be coming from the suspension. Bangs or crashes are likely to be the suspension drop links at the front end needed to be replaced.
  • Interior features on the Fiesta have been known to squeak and make noise, so bear in mind that when listening for engine and suspension noises some could be coming from inside the car. Cures for this vary, but some involved replacing folding seat buttons and lubricating the rear seats.
